View Full Version : What photo books would you like to receive as gifts?
Now that the holidays are descending once again, I was wondering which photo books are on your wish list?
It might be a good way to hear about things which are under our radar, and remind us of others which we may have forgotten about.

Great timing for this post!
I had wanted to order Les McLean's book from a Canadian importer but had no luck. When I mentioned this on APUG one of our members wrote to me saying that he'd send me he text from the U.S.
Well, not only did Gary892 mail me Les's book but he sent it as a gift.No charge to me.Gob smacked to be sure.
Sorry if I've embarrassed you Gary but this gave me the perfect opportunity for a public thank you.

Last week I ordered The Negative, The Print and The Camera. They arrived a few days ago so I gave them to my wife to wrap up and give back to me.

In my Amazon wish list I have "Recollections" by Philip Jones Griffiths
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Recollections-Philip-Jones-Griffiths/dp/1904563708/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1FKWJ4Y7IIOEW&colid=34T91IBC4H2ET
And "England, My England" by Chris Steele-Perkins.

But what I'd really like is "Heimat" by Peter Bialobrzeski, but it's out of print and I'm not spending $80 for it.
http://www.amazon.com/Peter-Bialobrzeski-Heimat-German/dp/3775716734
Or even "Chili, September 1973" by Koen Wessing, but there's no way I'm dropping $1570 for a 24 page photo book.

Correction:
Clifford Coffin: Photographs from Vogue, 1945 to 1955
Got this from Central Library and fell in love with it. I was so glad that they had it, as I didn't want to drop the money on it without judging the quality first. I did a report on him based on this book. Boy, do I wish I had a nice complete collection of Vogue and Look from this period. He and Penn, my two favorite fashion photographers (and perhaps the only fashion photographers who I actually like) were all over the magazines in this period.
Also:
Ernst Haas Color Photography
Another of my favorite books that is at this point a library-only pleasure. I do not know how many times I have borrowed it.....
...and:
Looking In: Robert Frank's 'The Americans'
I am currently borrowing this from a student, and loving it...just don't have the time that I would like to devote to it, since it is a borrowed copy.

I flipped through those three at the local Barnes and Noble, and I found them quite interesting. They're on my wish list, right under the 8x10 camera, lens, tripod, and fridge full of 8x10 HP5+ :D

My friend Peter Spangenberg tells me that our favorite photographer is going to have an exhibit at the Getty in February. The book will be “The Photographs of Frederick H. Evans” (Hardcover) ~ Anne M. Lyden (Author), Hope Kingsley (Author) It was supposed to start shipping November 28th, but I see that it hasn’t. My wife is keeping the wish list. Amazon or the Getty

I could use the Ralph's new book and the Weston nudes.
This isn't a photo book but I think it may have tons of fanciful visual inspiration: Carl Jung's Red book... which is quite controversial.
