APUG full foreign language support is almost up and running (German, French, Dutch)

Hi All,

This is a project that I have been quite happy to take on and it's only the beginning. It involves dedicated language forums for German, French & Dutch. Not just translated forum titles but also the ability for members to change the complete language set and buttons of the APUG system. You will notice this new addition in the main APUG menu bar. German is mostly running but needs a few tweaks. French and Dutch are in progress. Once these 3 forums are complete we can look into additional dedicated languages. I would like to thank all those involved in providing me translations and volunteering to moderate forums in their language. This should continue to grow our base even further. Strength in numbers :)

Could it be that you mean languages other than English? Rather than "foreign".

From my 20 years in NZ it was apparent that everyone picked up a little Maori, even if was from government proclamations, foreign was not applicable. when applied to languages other than English :-)

There is only one real English. That's English English (but Canadian English is closer than some!).

Sean, after surfing through almost all of the German threads today, it is interesting to see the amount of new people posting. Most having under 5 posts to their name!.

Whilst there appeared to be some doubt to the need, or necessity of a German sub-forum by some German speaking APUG members, it does seem that there were more than a few people out there who could not converse in English well enough to participate.

I'm sure these new people, who voted with their keyboards, are thankful.

Time will tell, hopefully it will be well used.

Sean, the flag is really cool. You mentioned that the French forum was WIP, so may be this is a point that will be addressed but I am wondering if we could have the equivalent of "today's posts" in the foreign language forums. Because otherwise, it is not easy to see what the new posts are nor to have an overview of the new subjects without drilling into each sections of the forum.
Also, there are spelling mistakes in the French forum...do you want me to list them out so that they are corrected?

Sean and I have discussed the possibility of Japanese and Chinese language forums. First thing is to make sure that these character sets wouldn't play havoc with the database in a multilingual forum the size of APUG. Once Sean has Dutch, French, and German sorted out and running smoothly (and rolls out the new classifieds and deals with whatever else is on his list these days), Asian language forums are a possibility.
