View Full Version : Hi....from Pennsylvania
Need help...would like to get into developing my on b&w negs, but have no idea how to start. Have been shooting for years, mostly slides. Switched to digital about 6 years ago and have not shot analog since then. I still have my Nikon F100 and N80. I have a place to set up a dark room, but do not know where to start as far as the equipment I need. What film is the best to start with, developer, etc. Where is the best place to purchase the start-up equipment I need. Any help anyone could give me is greatly appreciated. Thank You (cpnp) Bob

Hello Bob and welcome to APUG. Is there any local community colleges you can got to? Sometimes there also local art centers you can attend. Look up the Darkroom equipment forum for ideas. There is also the classifieds section.

Welcome from southwest PA! You didn't say where in PA you are, but darkroom stuff shows up on the Pittsburgh Craigslist fairly often. I have a darkroom in my basement, so if you're anywhere near me, I don't mind lending a hand or some brain cells.
There's a lot of accumulated knowledge on this site.

Welcome to APUG, Bob. As for a good film and developer combination to start out with, a classic combination is Tri-X developed in D-76. Personally, I prefer to use Xtol as a developer. I'm afraid that a lot of different people will chime in mentioning their favorite films and developers, and that is likely to confuse you. But Tri-X and D-76 is as standard a combination as there is.

I actually live in two places...Lebanon...and also have a home near Sunbury.
I usually leave for Alaska around the first of May, but will not be able to leave until mid June this year, as my daughter is getting married on June 6.
Would love to get together with you sometime.....where are you located....
thank you Bob
