ok holga is stupid. first because is far away from the real thing. they are based on soviet lc-a. some lame americans visited some FSU country some years ago, found about about the real lomo cameras and the quality, and consumerized that on a pseudo-trend-culture thing. 99% of holga users dont even know about exposures, light, f stops and whatever.
but appart from that there are people, very good photogs who use it with creativity. much creativity. they dont count on the plastic to do it's thing. they do PHOTOGRAPHS.

anyway, i was never a fan, and i will never be.

But one thing i credit holga company, is that they are a quite large market share for medium format film.. they consume much, so we are less afraid it will go away.

I thought Holga was Chinese, and the Lomo LC-A was popularised by a couple of Austrians.

Holga was designed by a Chinese at Hongkong and made in China. It was popularized about 10+ years ago by Freestyles, sold around $12 each, mostly to educational market as a tool for learning to use medium format. Its unique artistic capability – yes I truly mean this - was found gradually by those practicing art students and teachers.

Lomography was started as a marketing tool from a group of Austrian and lately being quite popular among younger "i-pod" generations. It was around 10 times more expensive than a Holga probably because its defined market audience.

There is nothing wrong for someone making use of market needs for hipster fashion to make money. Both Holga and Lomography helped expanding analog film market and keep the younger generation to use medium format and 35mm film. To me this is a very positive thing. I actually enjoy the resulting images from both Holga and Lomography though I pay a little more respect to Holga 120 because it was and still mainly is marketed by Freestyle:) . And I love to see Holga expanding to cover stereo, panoramic, Polaroid, pinhole, all sorts of possibilities, all with a relatively low price tag.

I like that if you add LOMO to a listing on ebay, people will look at even if it is ancient film. I love that people now use lomos but I hate that lomography has turned the LCA and other cool cameras into the tools of idiots. Reading the lomography website is painful even if I love my lomo.

Eh, reading Leica forums can be equally painful, even when I was an avid Leica shooter :D All you people with K1000's and AE-1's (etc) would have been LOMO'ed
