I am leaving for Australia on Sept 21st, and I'm still trying to put together an itinerary for the trip. I am considering Tasmania, but, I am also considering photographing the Murray River. I started this project two years ago, shooting around the Euchuca area. This time, I was considering following the river all the way into South Australia. I shoot primarily 4x5 Velvia 100F. Any suggestions on subjects, locations, as well as any cautions. would be appreciated.

As a resident of Victoria, you've probably seen more of that area than me! :) I was going to suggest Echuca but you've already been there! What sort of subjects are you after?

Have a google on a place near Mildura called Mungo National Park. (eg. http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/parks.nsf/ParkContent/N0049?Opendocument&ParkKey=N0049&Type=xo ) Planning to go there one day myself!

I'm primarily a landscape photographer, and I'm looking for areas where I can get good views of the River Red Gums against the Murray. I prefer early morning and late afternoon for the warm light. I also like desert colors, rivers and streams.

A couple of areas I considered include: Murray-Sunset and Hattah Kulkyne National Parks (haven't been to either). I also would like to follow the river through Murray Bridge to where it empties into the ocean. I found one web site, Murray River Web Site (http://www.murrayriver.com.au/homepage.htm), but I don't know anyone with local knowledge of the area.

Boy do you bring back memories! I was in Victoria and worked on a cattle station right on the Murray about 25 years ago. I was up in the Mitta Valley which if I remember correctly was about 40-60 MILES outside of Albury/Wodonga (Border of Victoria and NSW). The Murray wasn't really all that spectacular where I was but up around the Mitta area there was an old gold mine called the Pioneer. It was the biggest gold mine in the Southern Hemisphere in it's day (I think late 1800's). It was absolutley fascinating (and big). Something like that might be of interest to you and the whole Mitta Valley is so unique. Another cool place is the Tangambalanga area up there as well. I'm jealous...Have a great trip.
