View Full Version : Negative Exchange Jim Moore 08-10-2004, 10:26 AM I know this has been discussed before but nothing ever seems to happen.
There appears to be enough interest and there's no reason we can't get this going.
Ideas?
Groups of 2.
Match format size if required. I can shoot/print 35mm to 8x10 so format is not an issue for me but is for others.
"Show your work". Send your work prints along with descriptions of what you did, what you like/don't like, why you made changes, etc. Show what you did from beginning to end. I feel this is the key to making this a good learning experience.
Possibly start a gallery to post the results so we could see the different printing styles.
Les has expressed interest in doing this. If Les (or no one else) has any objections I would like to be paired with him for the first round ;)
Sign up by replying to this thread and please feel free to offer your suggestions.
Thanks!
Jim David A. Goldfarb 08-10-2004, 10:41 AM I think it's actually been started. Mark recently emailed me to say he has some negs on the way. Jim Moore 08-10-2004, 11:01 AM I think it's actually been started. Mark recently emailed me to say he has some negs on the way.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to step on anyones toes.
I was (and apparently several others) unaware of this.
If anyone would still like to join in you are more than welcome, I see no reason there can't be more than one going on at the same time. I for one love doing this type of thing and can't get enough of it :p
Jim BWGirl 08-10-2004, 11:24 AM I shoot 35mm and can enlarge 35mm so let me know if anyone would like to exchange negs with me on this. I have one in particular that has given me grief for a while!
Jeanette Silverpixels5 08-10-2004, 11:24 AM lol...i think there are more than one. Eric has one for small and medium format, and mark has one going for large format. There are only 3 on the large format one, so i'm sure theres room for others to join. Jim Moore 08-10-2004, 03:45 PM It is my understanding that the negative exchange that is going on now was started with the idea everyone would print the "same" negative. Each member would interpret the negative and the results would be different printing styles.
If I am wrong please forgive me.
That is a good idea, but it is not the same as I would like to do.
My idea is more of a "1 on 1" exchange that (I hope) would be used as a learning tool.

Jim Count me in, Jim!
I enlarge anything from 35mm to 5x7" negatives, or contact print 5x7" to 8x10" on POP paper - or van Dyke - or cyanotype... Jim Moore 08-10-2004, 04:25 PM Round #1 Negative Exchange Member List:

Leon I've been in most things here so why not!
I shoot 35mm and 645, can print (relative term!) 35mm thru 6x7.
I also suggest everyone makes two identical prints, one to send and one to keep to compare to the one your receive from your Neg-Buddy! Aggie 08-10-2004, 07:53 PM Aww shoot, like Nige says, count me in. I can do anything from 4x5 down. Any preferences to size of the print, or type of paper used (RC or fiber)? Jim Moore 08-10-2004, 08:29 PM Any preferences to size of the print, or type of paper used (RC or fiber)?
I think print size should be up the the person printing the negative. Some subjects look better small, some large.
As for RC or Fiber...
Personally I print everything that "go's out the door" in Fiber, but I have no issues with people using RC.
Jim Timothy 08-11-2004, 09:10 AM Please count me in. I shoot only 4x5 these days although I am equipped to print from negs of 35mm, 6x6, or 6x9 as well as 4x5. I should probably stick with working with someone else who is working in 4x5.
Thanks,

Why? I'm in for 35mm, 6x4.5 or 6x6 if thats ok Eric Rose 08-11-2004, 01:05 PM well since negs have been sent out I guess I will bow out. Timothy 08-11-2004, 01:49 PM Why?
Well..., your right of course, their is no reason to stick to only 4x5. In fact the whole idea is to do something or see something that someone else does that I would not have seen or done on my own. :) BWGirl 08-11-2004, 03:52 PM Sooooo Jim, you gonna pair us up? What's the time line? :D Good of you to organize this!

Hey Jeanette,
I think I'll give it through the weekend to see if we can get more people to join.
Thanks!
Jim Jim Moore 08-14-2004, 08:42 AM Last chance to join if interested. I will probably close this Sunday evening.
Is a random drawing OK with everyone to determine who swaps with who?

Shesh=35mm or 6x6
Donald Miller=35mm to 5x7
Thanks.... This should be fun.
Jim Shesh 08-14-2004, 08:57 AM I would like to join in. I can print either 35mm or 6x6. I will be sending out a 35mm negative strip.
Ramdom drawing is fine by me. Thanks for the effort, Jim. Timothy 08-14-2004, 09:09 AM Yes, random drawing is ok with me too. Looking forward to this.
Tim R Random draw is just fine. I promise not to send a 5x7" negative, since I seem to be the only one who does that! But 35mm or 6x4.5, if not paired with a 4x5" printer. Donald Miller 08-14-2004, 11:29 AM How often would this exchange occur?
My schedule has gotten fairly congested lately but this sounds interesting. I can enlarge everything from 5X7 down. Can also contact print 8X10 negatives. BWGirl 08-14-2004, 11:54 AM Random drawing is great! This is very exciting! (you can tell I don't get out much!)

Donald,
I'm not putting a time frame on these. My thinking is to give everyone a chance to make and return their prints without being distracted by "deadlines".
When everyone is done we can begin a new round.
