I was at the Aurora Camera Club meeting on Monday and another member (who does not do digital at all) came up and asked me why we didn't get the analog club we had been talking about starting up and running. By way of background we have both been active members of various camera clubs in the Denver area for over 20 years each. So we are having an organizational meeting on Wednesday January 19, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the meeting room in Aurora Fire Station No. 11. This is the northwest corner of Iliff and Joliet which is about 4 blocks east of Havana or a mile west of I225 on Iliff.
I saw the thread about Englewood Camera Club and thought I would post about our meeting. This will be an analog only club. Digital topics will not be discussed. There are enough clubs doing that already. We will be discussing whether we want to have regulasr competitions or not. If we do, there will be slides and prints. Prints would need to be done in a darkroom if made by the photographer or made from the slide or negative if processed commercially. My thoughts are that ink jet or glicee prints would not be allowed but that will be a subject for discussion.
We know that there are more than a few members of the various clubs that are still actively doing analog photography and will be calling or otherwise contacting them to see if they are interested. So far we have received favorable responses from members of Aurora, North Jeffco, and DPS. If you are interested please come to the meeting.

Yeah, I posted on the Englewood Camera Club, which is utterly hopeless, I think. The final nail may have been the recent discussion amongst the membership that they won't bring in pros anymore to give talks/slideshows/presentations, but will instead focus on providing digital seminars (primarily photoshop, lightroom, and Silver Efex). My membership may be up anyway, so I definitely recommend staying away if you shoot analog, as they are NOT analog friendly in the least. I tried, it's all I could do.
So, I'm definitely going to try to get over there for this meeting. Thanks for organizing this!

I was until recently a happy member of a 'camera club" which was originally focused on being a 'Print Group" - It's focus was that you would present prints and get helpful commnets on you prints of work in progress, etc.
Then more techniques to teach people about exposure, depth of field, off camera lighting, quality of lighting etc. seminars started to happen more regularly.
It worked ok for a while because most film cameras worked pretty much the same in manual mode, and the seminars always emphasized using the computer in your head first.
Then the D thing came along. Everybody wanted to learn their menu tree options more then the image the thing produced for it's user. And users presumed the D thing did everything for you, so they could not even seem to think how exposure factors would weigh into how you may want to intepret your capture of a scene with D on manual.
Then Photoshop ruled the day. I have not been to this group for almost a year now.
I would suggest make the new group a print group. Keep the image capture technology out of it.
D folks would be welcomed if they want commentary on prints they bring in.
Banish the laptop and projector, or computer app this or that will be taking over in a second.

In the spirit of keeping it film-oriented, I agree with the general suggestions above, but I wouldn't say totally ban all electronics. For example, maybe some things related to print scanning (color correction, unsharp mask, etc) -- the end result is digital, but it's film based.
Just a thought. I would also say digital would be welcome as long as they want to learn about the composition and the mechanics, rather than the computer menus.
Just an opinion.

Toro_Mike Thanks for posting the map. This is the place. The entrance to the parking lot is off of Joliet at the north end of the lot.
Mike Wilde I would like to keep slides in the club - real slides not the digitally projected images that most clubs have been showing for the last 2-3 years. Of the half dozen or so clubs that I am familiar with in the Denver area only two still have slide competitions. Some have even sold off their slide projectors. At least one club is digital projection only, they don't even show prints.
One interesting question revolves around what we will consider an analog color print to be because the "machine prints" (e.g. Frontier) make a scan of the print, the operator can adjust cropping, color balance, and exposure digitally, and then the print is made on RA4 paper which is chemically processed. My thinking is that these would be OK since the photographer submits the slide or negative and does not control the digital happenings. Something along these lines will need to happen because most photographers do not have color darkrooms set up. What are your thoughts?
I have already had one person ask if we would be allowing the photographer to make a scan and print it at home on his inkjet printer. I told him that this would be up to the group but probably not.
I hope to see you at the meeting and be able to put faces with the names/handles.

I would allow machine prints, either digital or analog exposed, or inkjets.
Oh, yes, conventional 35mm slides sure, keep them if there is interest.
What to focus on is the impact of the image, and perhaps the desriptions of the processing manipulations. diffusion, cropping , unsharp mask, pattern masking, dodge, burn, selective area contrast control are all valid techniques that are common to both A and D platforms that yeild prints.
The other side to think about is D image capture, D generated A neg, analog traditional silver or alt process print, or D image capture to lambda output on traditional silver paper. Why count those paths to yield a prit for consideration out. Way Beyond Monochrome ed2 has a great work flow possibilities diagram in it to show all of the possible current permuations.

Be sure to sum up the meeting here, if you have a bit of free time. I won't be able to make it (I'm up North, plus working 4x 10hrs this week to make up for unpaid Monday off), but I wouldn't mind following your exploits after-the-fact.

We had 9 people at the meeting and 6 more (not including the above e-mails) that called to say that they couldn't make it due to the weather and road conditions. Three of the 9 have working darkrooms and 2 more have darkrooms that are not being used currently. Since about half do not have the ability to make analog prints thermselves there was a spirited discussion about how we should handle hybrid prints. It will probably be discussed again but, for the time being, they will be handled separately from prints made by the photographer using traditional darkroom processes. We will not have formal competitions at this time.
The next meetings will be at the same Fire Station on Feb 2 and March 2, again at 7:00 pm. We are asking everybody to bring two images, either prints or slides, for discussion. They can be either final images or images that you need help with.

Sounds like it went very well and is going to be a great group! Glad to hear about the turnout. I'll definitely be there on March 2 and you can add me to the group with a working darkroom (B&W only).

The firehouse was already booked for the 2nd of Feb and March. We had to reschedule our meetings. They will now be on Feb 14 and March 14.

Hey Pinholer, those new dates also work great for me too. You can also put me down as having a full working darkroom in B&W and color for film and paper.
