Hi all

A friend of mine who is the owner of one of the few dedicated photo galleries in New Zealand is later this month heading to San Francisco and NY to look at whats happening in the photo art world.

Can any one suggest good galleries for him to visit and cheap hotels to stay at? (I have suggested the Dakota in San Fran and Hotel 17 in NY only as I have stayed at each of them.)

The Stephen Wirtz Gallery (http://www.wirtzgallery.com/) in San Francisco is home to Michael Kenna. They have lots of his prints there to peruse. Several other art galleries are neighboring along Geary St., but I can't offer any suggestions.

4 in the Phelan building on Market alone, Brookings is gone, Fort Mason, and many many more. Don't forget the East Bay area either. Stanford has a nice gallery. In Napa I can drive right to the winery, (forgot the name) that has a permenant AA collection and contemporary artists in rotation.

Bypass SF and go to Carmel ;)

Yes! The John Stevenson Gallery on 14th St. in NYC is excellent. There are soooo many excellent galleries here also that it might be good to check out the ones listed on the following sites and choose among them the ones with work you are interested in (these lists are VERY comprehensive!):

Ditto regarding the John Stevenson gallery and above sources. When I go gallery hopping, I usually just pick up _The Village Voice_ and see what's up. It's free anywhere in the 5 boroughs of New York or you can check online at www.villagevoice.com.

RAP, good call - However, the AfterImage Gallery is in Dallas, up the road a bit from Houston. Send Ben an email, he's a great guy and been open since the 70's as a Photography Gallery. Check his web site for info, he has an article about lugging around the photo from Adams with the moon rising in New Mexico, and dropping the thing...was only a $125 photo back then...also, the Edward Carter has a good web site, never been to the gallery.

I thought the links page would be the most helpful with links to almost all AIPAD members all over the world, including SF and NYC. Maybe Davids friend should contact AIPAD and find out when and where their conventions are. That way he can see a whole group of dealers in one location and talk with them.

They have one in NYC at the Hilton every Feb. I have been to several and it is well worth the effort.

I met Ben and his lovely wife, at a AIPAD convention in NYC several years ago.

Sadly, because it was a really good gallery (I bought a Chistopher Burkett 'graph there) the Edward Carter gallery and his several other galleries have ceased to exist. Several years ago, he apparently overextended himself, went bankrupt, and 'fled' to Singapore. The gallery in NYC was great though...the place is missed I'm sure.

I'd always wondered what happened with the Edward Carter Gallery. Now I know. For a time the Alinder Gallery in Gualala appeared to be owned by Edward Carter. I've heard it's since changed it's name again and moved across the street. Now I have an inkling why.
