View Full Version : Southeast area get together? glbeas 09-17-2004, 04:16 PM We need to plan a meet for this area, it's just to good to resist! How many Apuggers here in the Southeast US have the desire for a meet in the near future?
I've met with esearing (Eric) and kayakerguy (Mark) and they are open to the idea. What I don't know is how many non posting members we have lurking in the area.
Lets start throwing some ideas around and see what happens. doughowk 09-17-2004, 06:14 PM Gary,
We have in NE Florida a Large Format photography group some of whose members do traditional photography. Maybe somewhere mutually interesting might be doable. On "about" section of my website I have the schedule of our group's outings. Keep us in mind if you have a planned meeting & I'll inform our group. Dorothy Blum Cooper 09-19-2004, 02:23 PM We're just outside of New Orleans. I don't post alot here on Apug...but I read alot ;)
What area would you consider meeting in? We have alot going on right now and will for the next couple of months, so time as well as location play a role in us (hubby and I) attending. glbeas 09-19-2004, 05:31 PM For now I'm mostly thinking of someplace within a few hours drive of Atlanta, if not closer. Depends on how many people we can get together and what the interests are. nikonuser 09-21-2004, 12:50 PM gary, I'm a beginner and new to APUG, but count me in. I can learn volumes just from listening to you folks talk. I'm in Birmingham and it doesn't matter to me where it is..I'm there glbeas 09-26-2004, 11:20 AM Mike, have you go to shoot the Sloss Furnaces yet? I'm told this makes a good afternoon shoot because of the direction of the sun at that time. This might be a good place for an Apug shoot.
A side note, with the Art School being in downtown Birmingham I'd have to wonder if theres a photo club hiding out there you could check up on. ScottH 10-28-2004, 02:21 PM I'm jumping in quite late here, but sounds interesting to me as well. Gary, you're virtually a neighbor as I'm in Alpharetta. It'd be fun to go shoot sometime, especially if you brought the 4x5. I'm just getting rolling with MF, but have always been curious about working w/ LF. glbeas 10-28-2004, 04:20 PM I'm jumping in quite late here, but sounds interesting to me as well. You would be quite welcome. I have three 4x5s as well as an 8x10 and Bronica SQAis for medium format, so theres plenty to play with.
Theres also two other neighbors to you, Kayakerguy and Esearing. DonbGa, Ann and Jsatterlie reside somewhere in the Atlanta area as well, but I haven't had the pleasure of spending any time with them. ScottH 11-02-2004, 11:09 AM Ha. Just re-read my prior post Gary and didn't intend to presume that I wanted to use your gear. Sorry 'bout that. I should have indicated an interest in learning more about LF work, seeing it "in use" , and ultimately seeing if it's something I'd purchase down the road. Your offer is very generous, and after some meetings I might be comfortable enough to use someone else's gear. Talk w/ you soon.

I don't mind you having a 'hands on' look at the gear, you really can't tell much without actually using the equipment. If we actually manage to get out on a shoot together you are welcome to try out whatever I have to form your own opinions on the matter. titrisol 11-03-2004, 12:17 PM Raleigh NC here..... SLNestler 12-11-2004, 06:24 PM Any interest in an excursion to the Everglades? glbeas 12-12-2004, 09:02 AM When do you have in mind? This in boats or hiking on dry trails? I'd love to see the place when I've got my wall project and knee surgery/recovery out of the way.
BTW I'd be interested in leading a few folks out to Rocktown on Pigeon Mountain to shoot the rock formations sometime. doughowk 12-12-2004, 10:28 AM Our NE Florida LF group has a couple of scheduled outings to Georgia next year; and maybe we could get together with fellow APUG'ers on one or both of these.
1) March 5th: A half-day trip to historic & scenic Cumberland Island, GA. Ferry departs from St Marys, Ga to Cumberland 9AM & return times are 2:45PM & 4:45PM.
2) June 11th, 8AM, Downtown Savannah, Georgia. A day trip & possible overnighter for those so interested. Photograph the architecture of downtown Savanah, possible visit to cemeteries, view SCAD exhibits. Checkergirl 02-07-2005, 02:52 PM Just joined apug after seeing them in BW magazine recently. I'd be interested in a mtg; I live in Micanopy, Fl, which is about 10 miles south of Gainesville (home to University of Florida). It's gorgeous here! Hope to meet you guys soon . . .
Checkergirl JeffD 02-19-2005, 12:34 AM Hey, I do large format (4x5 lens and pinhole) out of the Atlanta area. Gary, I think we have run into each other through the Dogwood City Grotto. I have never gone out shooting with other folks before, but it might be interesting. glbeas 02-19-2005, 03:34 PM We had a pretty good trip out to Rocktown, thought the roughness of the switchback road up the mountain made a few city types a bit nervous. I'd be willing to go back in a month or two and shoot some more. Seems my weekends are getting filled before I know whats happening. PM me sometime JeffD, maybe we can get together and shoot the bull over coffee and compare notes. We've got a growing Apug contingent here who like to get out together and burn film. kayakerguy 02-21-2005, 01:47 PM Gary I enjoyed the trip, and would like to go back again when I have more time to spend there. I enjoyed meeting everyone else too. Great bunch of people! I'm STILL unpacking from the recent move, and don't have the darkroom setup so it will be awhile to see any fruits of the labor of getting up that mountain. The couger is just not cut out for four wheeling :-) Let me know if your going on any trips that you think might interest me. With the new house and unpacking from the move, it's hard for me to plan anything right now, but I might be able to steal away for awhile from time to time. doughowk 03-07-2005, 08:04 PM A few of us Large Format APUG'ers from North Florida, along with other photographers from the area will be meeting April 2nd (a Saturday) in downtown Savannah. Maybe others from the SE area could join, & we could share a toast to Sean. That weekend includes their annual Tour of Homes & Gardens (http://www.savannahtourofhomes.org/eshop/10Browse.asp?Category=Ticket) . We plan to meet 8-9 AM in downtown Forsyt Park (see map (http://www.savcvb.com/savannah/maps/downtown.shtml)) . Hi, I might be interested in hanging out for a while with some people who won't ask me why I have not thought of using a dig... (You know... ) camera.
I'm located near Birmingham... So I could do a day trip. glbeas 04-09-2005, 06:25 PM Hi, I might be interested in hanging out for a while with some people who won't ask me why I have not thought of using a dig... (You know... ) camera.

You might not need to go far. My wife and I are interested in doing the Sloss Furnaces, we are told they are a good afternoon shoot for the lighting. May be a few weekends before we can get away though, got a wedding to shoot next weekend and no telling what the dayjob will throw at us until all the annual reports are printed for the customers. You know, I have never been to Sloss Furnaces to make pictures. I was in there about forty years ago... When steele was still being made! A lot of smoke, soot, and heat! Let me know when you are coming over, I have heard its a real cool place now. ScottH 04-22-2005, 01:23 PM I'd be very interested in this one as well. I've heard about the furnaces before, from Gary among others. I'm gonna do a quick search on them as well. -- For the forseeable future, my Saturdays are unavailable for a day trip, but just about any Sun. will do with a little notice. Perhaps one of the May Sunday's between Mother's Day and Memorial weekend? I wouldn't expect the heat to be too bad at that time either. Digidurst 04-22-2005, 02:32 PM I'm in Rock Hill, SC and wouldn't mind a get together.
p.s. Where is Rocktown? glbeas 04-22-2005, 04:24 PM I'm in Rock Hill, SC and wouldn't mind a get together.
