View Full Version : We're Back! Thanks to the incredible service at our new host http://www.realwebhost.net (a hosting company that gets rave reviews within the forum software community) we are back up 2 days before I estimated. Their technician Joey managed the entire transfer for me, so it was fairly painless. I was expecting a nightmare and weekend lost, so am very happy right now.
Our old host Lunarpages, although a superb host is a shared hosting company which means they can not handle larger sites too well. They have many sites per server. -so we were asked to leave.
We are now on a semi-dedicated hosting package at realwebhost. Meaning we are only sharing an entire server with a few sites rather than 100 or so sites on cheaper shared hosting plans (lunarpages). The operating cost has jumped to $70 per month, but we can handle it thanks to sponsors, subscriptions, and misc donations.
I think this move has been a blessing in disguise and we are set to handle some huge growth now!
Thanks for your patience during this change :)
-oh thanks as well to Brian who kept getting constant Yahoo Messenger blips from me "can you see it? now? now? how about now?" hehe :) David A. Goldfarb 09-29-2004, 12:07 AM Looks good! Thanks again for rescuing APUG! wow, I can't believe the dns switched so fast for you david. can you do some tests for me? if you go to http://www.apug.org does it load the regular home page. is the gallery working ok for you? notice anything that is not right? And, are banner ads loading for you? thanks! Thomassauerwein 09-29-2004, 12:23 AM Looks the same Sean, thanks again for you dilligence! Thanks Thomas, I'm beyond relieved.. galyons 09-29-2004, 12:28 AM Sean,
Thanks for your extraordinary efforts to get the site back online. Glad to hear that this may be a better hosting service for the future!
Cheers,
Geary Jorge 09-29-2004, 12:39 AM I gotta tell you, that guy Joey is a genious.....the site looks perfect! it's working on my IBM work connection now, everything looks great. what a day! hehe oh yeah, this new box is FAST too, dual 3GHZ XEONS, was talking to the tech and our cpu load is currently 0.04, not bad :) ian_greant 09-29-2004, 01:16 AM It's now good up in the Frozen North as well.
I tell ya it's not like the days of old where it took a week for a DNS change to spread.
Glad it went so smooth Sean, and that you didn't lose a precious weekend.
Cheers,
Ian wfwhitaker 09-29-2004, 01:36 AM You know, I don't understand a bit of this digital-speak. But I'm still impressed. Thanks from the analog world for such a quick changeover. :)

Please, let us know if the costs are rising above what we are donating. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that we are willing to give a little more for having APUG on-line.
Thanks again for your work, Sean!

That baby can handle Photoshop really well...
ARRRRRGHHHH....Why are you spanking me....! :) Jeanne 09-29-2004, 02:20 AM Amazing work all around! Thanks for all you do, Sean, and to all of you who contribute. When I want information this is the first place I come. And well, maybe the entertainment's good, too ;) Quick and painless - I didn't notice it was moved until I read this thread!
Big hand of applause to those involved! Please, let us know if the costs are rising above what we are donating. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that we are willing to give a little more for having APUG on-line.
My wife will see to that, you can count on it! hehe
We are looking pretty good at the moment so no worries, thanks :) M. Walter Lyon 09-29-2004, 06:50 AM Sean
Great job! I kinda freaked out yesterday. The site went down while I was online. BTW looks like 2 posts on the APUG photo challenge forum vanished from yesterday. One was mine and one was Flotsam's. Just FYI. I couldn't believe how distraught I felt yesterday when the site went down. I have really grown addicted to it. You can count on me getting a subscription soon. BTW will the new service affect our gallery size? TPPhotog 09-29-2004, 07:02 AM Sean,
Fantastic job and many thanks for the hell you must have gone through over the past 24 hours or so. Great to have you back so soon, I though I was actually going to have to spend time with my family ;)

Oh Christ....the family...??? You mean, the people walking around outside the darkroom yelling at you? Oh dear, that is scary! TPPhotog 09-29-2004, 07:08 AM Oh Christ....the family...??? You mean, the people walking around outside the darkroom yelling at you? Oh dear, that is scary!
Very much so and I've even heard it said that communicating with ones family can lead to the discovery that your not compatible. Much safer for a long term relationship to be ships that pass in the night ;) photomc 09-29-2004, 08:24 AM GREAT Job Sean and all involved. Was online when it went down as well, but did see your post Sean..Thanks for that, would have seemed worse without knowing something. Did see the periodic post with status update, but did not try after seeing the site was in move mode.
Good to have the site back..works great from work, will see how it looks with the old dial-up line at home this afternoon. kwmullet 09-29-2004, 08:39 AM Sean,

TonyWoke up at 5:30 as my wife was getting ready to head out to work and the first thing she said to me was "You've got so much more time now! APUG is down!". Apparently, she just saw the status page on the notebook but didn't do a reload to see if it was still down.
Maybe it's about time for me to upgrade my subscriber plan to the wireless neurochip auto-update plan. Barring that, maybe a heads-up RSS display on my contact lenses.
-KwM- Wow - if I hadn't subscribed last week (eCheck still pending, I think), I would have definitely done it to help with the server migration. (and to see it back up so quickly, too!)
Thanks for the great site! anyte 09-29-2004, 09:34 AM What a shock to log on last night to find the site down last night. Great to see it back up again already this morning. Thanks Sean and thanks to the new webhost. sparx 09-29-2004, 09:35 AM Damn you must be good. If you hadn't posted this thread I would never have known APUG had gone away. Good work fella :D |
