Last night prior to printing the PDN Color Density Range Palette on my Epson 1280 I decided to compare the accuracy of printing an alignment test on Epson Enhanced Matt paper and Pictorico OHP.

I aligned the the printer based on the alignment check printed on paper, I then repeated the alignment check using OHP. After examinig the OHP with a loupe, I determined that the alignment needed no adjustment.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Prior to performing the alignment check I upgraded the 1280 driver with the current version listed on the Epson website (I'm using Windows XP Pro.) I went from version 5.19 to 5.22.

After the driver change much to my horror I discovered that Epson has eliminated the display of the DPI values in the custom setup dialog box for the Print Quality Settings. The list now includes - Fine, Photo, Best Photo, Photo RPM. I have no idea how to relate these settings to DPI.

Has anyone encountered this before?

I would expect this to always be the case. The nozzles point straight down so there is no effect caused by the paper thickness. If it is aligned on one media it will be aligned on others. You might want to align on photo paper though to minimize the ink bleed. I have found it hard to pick the best match at times with copier paper.

Don, I only mentioned it because some people might be really cheap and use copier paper. I know I did at first.

I hadn't encountered that. I loaded what I though were the most recent drivers a 10 days or so ago, and I think it still shows dpi. I'm assuming you are in the "advanced" area of the driver interface? Maybe I didn't download the newest version (i'm at work now, and can't check).

I would suggest sending Epson tech support an email, and see what they say. If you find out for sure what those descriptors mean, in terms of dpi, can you post it?

Yes this is the advanced screen setup. I'll try to post a screen dump and I will contact Epson, what a bunch of rats to put it politely. If I can't get this resolved promptly I'l roll back the driver version.
