    by , 01-12-2011 at 10:34 PM
it was too cold tonight to roast outside. around 20ºF, and about 6 or 7 fresh inches of
snow on the ground, so i put the stovetopfan on and opened a window.

grabbed my blackened spoon and scattered them for 20 minutes.
they smoked a little, but not too bad.
i watched as they went from whitish yellowish to brownish tan
to darker. the chaff littered the wok as the beans ...

  2. 4th batch

    by , 01-11-2011 at 06:19 AM

he had a client years ago he roasted for but she hasn't come back
in years. when i called a few weeks ago i could tell he was happy.

    the first ...

  3. ( no 130 ) sumatranol, just plain old sumatranol

    by , 01-06-2011 at 03:47 PM
it was about 1245 and i didn't have much time
i grabbed a few rolls of 125 and the mamiya and headed to the cove.
the light was soft, the sky was grey and it was about 25ºF.
i pulled into a parking space as i listened to the tires crunch on the ice.
the film was put in and advanced.
instead of 125 or 80, i rated the film at 20ish, a stop or two lower than i usually shoot it.
the wind blew but the sand was frozen

  4. let the user judge ...

    by , 01-04-2011 at 08:55 AM

they used to say in their catalogs that it is the person using the lens that has
the final say, they know how they work, they can figure out how to use the lens
and decide for themselves if the lens is right for them.
the same sort of thing can be said for using a film or print developer.
it is the person using it that will understand if it will work for him or her, not
    the opinions ...

  5. first of the new year

    by , 01-02-2011 at 11:42 PM
i had this bag of coffee, all roasted and ground and it was burning a hole on my counter.
every time i pulled a few shots of espresso, every time i made lunch, every time i did dishes
or made dinner ... it just stared me down. i could hear it whispering to me.
well, tonight in near darkness i loaded the mamiya up with plus x
and i walked around the melted snow.
grass was peeking through in the january thaw
it was muddy and foggy and the street lamp was ...
