More adventures in collodion

Posted 04-22-2008 at 08:45 AM by TheFlyingCamera
Well, the new silver bath is set up and running. I couldn't be happier with it, as it does everything you could expect it to do, and looks beautiful to boot. It inspires me to become a better woodworker every time I look at it.

I think I finally have my process under control - I was having severe veiling in addition to the problems I had with the darkslide scraping my plates. Well, with switching to the 11x14 plates, which properly fit my plate holders, I cured the scraping problem....

New silver bath on its way!

I ordered a silver bath for my wet-plate work from Steve Silipigni, in Rochester, NY. Steve does terrific work and maintains great communication with his customers - he calls/emails at each phase in the process, and asked me several questions about how I wanted the box made (I had an 11x14 box, and he made it so the 14" dimension was the horizontal, so it would be easier to insert and remove the plates in a darkbox or under a low ceiling). Artomatic is coming again!

Posted 04-13-2008 at 06:50 AM by TheFlyingCamera

For those who have never heard of Artomatic, it is this (semi-) annual show here in Washington DC that is run by artists for artists. It moves around each time because the show is so big, and there is a dearth of exhibition space in DC. The show got its name from the...

how can my manual camera be on auto ?

Posted 04-11-2008 at 07:47 AM by jnanian
i have several cameras.
they all seem to have an auto function.
i didn't realize it until recently.
all i need to do is focus, and no matter the
scene, the shutter and fstop somehow
do their thing.
it doesn't seem to matter the camera,
i point the camera and "something else"
that appears on my film.

Sally Mann Exhibit

Posted 04-04-2008 at 03:53 AM by aolsson
A whole group of us went to Helsingborg to see the Sally Mann exhibit.

They had the "whole enchilada" on display - including the pictures from "What Remains" (and even the slightly infamous "Three Graces".

It was very interesting to see the change of technique from the rather straight (modern film, perfect lenses) in "Immediate Family" to the wet-collodion pictures with long exposure and sometimes seriously flawed lenses in the...
