  1. Remembering Rita....

by , 01-18-2011 at 07:01 PM (Chasing light..)
By 1964 the country was getting over its love affair with huge tail fins on the big cars coming out of Detroit, which was only a few hours ride from my house. But not me, even at 7 years old my obsession with Harley Earl designs, the sexy curves, alluring pastel colors, and spicy chrome dressings would hold my attention for entire afternoons at a time. And for some reason - unknown to an elementary school-roughneck, during this time Rita's dad always had a long lean Caddy, Olds, or Buick parked ...

  2. Apparently my generosity knows no bounds . . .

So this customer of mine (drummer, laid back kinda dude) comes in Friday. Haven't seen him in a while so we strike up a conversation. How ya's and nice holidays and all that.

He asks how me photography is going? Well, I tell him how it's been slow this year. Not shooting much 35mm anymore, all large format. Take him in the other room and show him the Beseler enlarger I've got kept at the store. He asks if I would be interested in an enlarger? I say, HECK YEAH! So what is it? ...
  3. On the RC - FB fence

I have a darkroom capable of producing 16x20s now. I've really enjoyed the results but the process is more difficult and less fun. This can be even more so with Fiber base paper. It's harder to get in the speed easel, more ornery in the trays, takes forever to wash. It makes something more difficult even more difficult. However I do like how it looks and I know it's viewed as "more serious" than RC. Oh, and let's not forget the post drying curl and I have yet to get a dry mount press ...
  4. New Studio!!!!

    by , 01-10-2011 at 09:34 PM
I've just gotten the lease for my new space, so the photography studio and teaching space is back in business! I'm in a much better location this time, walking distance from two different Metro stops, a short bus ride from Union Station, and also a short walk to Chinatown. As soon as I get settled in, I'll be putting together a calendar of classes. Look for classes to begin in the March/April time frame.
  5. Its been a YEAR??

    by , 01-05-2011 at 04:52 PM
Dang! My last post was a year ago... time flies, huh?

Well, as mentioned in the last post, I decided to keep track of hours spent in my darkroom. I added up the tic marks on the wall for a grand total of ... 101 hours. Sure doesn't seem like much. I have to remind myself that this represents darkroom hours only, not time spent shooting or teaching. And there was only one month that no dkrm work at all was done--certainly an improvement over anything in the past when I would ...
