I was extremelly impressed When I saw some photographs of William Henry Jackson Glass Plates at National Geographic Magazine. Than when I researched the art , it seems to me impossible due to find the lenses, camera and the price of the chemicals. Than this year Eastman House reported a find of a glass plate city negative , they scanned it to one side to other side distance equals to 50 meters or 160 foots. There was still a new detail. Scan size was 150 gigabytes.

If we play with alternative or silver gelatin technology which produces immense detail , and if my only viewers are the APUG members at gallery , I thought I can miniaturazed the glass size to may be few centimeters wide .

May be I could contact print 2 centimeters wide carbon or platin prints also and scan them to 7 times and voila!

Chemical prices drops , camera weights drops.

What are commercial limits for 35mm film photography?

I'm usually on the artistic side...

What I wanted to ask about is pretty broad subject (I'm a simple person, so I tackle complex problems easily :D)

I'm usually on the artistic side of photography, chatting about aesthetics, meaning, communication, visual language, and relations to other works or media. Besides that, I'm living frugal life and I'm working in a different way (typesetting). I don't care about making money with my photos, so I can do what I want within some time frames and budgets, or the lack of it. But I'm trying to imagine how life of a "professional photographer" looks like nowadays. Not the bottom line feeder, not a full time job in advertisement (shooting sausages or weddings or models portfolios are the things I can imagine painfully well). How about a not-so-busy freelance photographer, or a landscape photography enthusiast, like me? I'm thinking if and how it could be possible to mend how I live into something more adventurous (to take the subject really broadly). Or what to avoid to help myself in the future. I know marketing techniques (having galleries online, exhibitions offline, creating a bit of a buzz, publishing albums)... Is there any reasonable way to actually work with 35mm film (that's shooting for money, not with own artistic creation)? Any advantage? (I feel like being banned ASAP for asking this)

What can be and what shouldn't be done with 35mm format? I don't mean creatively, but professionally. Is it reasonable to work (and earn money) in the analog way with 35mm format? How one can "sell" traditional film photography attitude nowadays, where people carry DSLRs that take more photos faster with better quality (raw file has greater contrast range recorded, I think) and can process photos in multiple ways, some of which were unimaginable before the 90s? I believe this idea just has to be treated differently, than just pushing scans on stocks... I'd bankrupt on scanning in no time this way, and any decent scanner is more, than year's worth of my salary.

What are the strong points with the 35mm film? Ethics, I guess, doesn't count where the industry starts. And the fact, that 99% of digital photography should simply be treated like a pollution, whereas we care for every single shot on film. We can't care more, than a guy with a camera hooked to his laptop, taking a closer look rightaway, in second or less. Film doesn't make the image any better or worse (or?), but it looks like a lost battle in terms of both quality and quantity, and we're left behind with our mindfulness as an only virtue. Mindfulness and Velvia.

What are technical limits of 35mm? Again, limits not from creative perspective, but for the industry (whoever buys the images or pays to make some)? I know it would be good enough for a magazine cover if it's not cropped much, but not enough to advertize coffee brand worldwide. I guess it's good and reasonable to make photos on film when I make "not many photos" (which is how I roll with my landscape work), as opposed to taking burst after burst (sport, journalism) and fighting to deliver the photos before anyone else. I hope the age of natgeo-ish surplus is over in our silver world, with the attitude of having "film carrying and loading assistents", using helicopters where it's hard to walk and shooting thousand of photos per hour.

Finally, are there any professional do's and dont's with small format?
I know some already:
As for a "don't", I expect that slide film is pretty much obsolete due to excellent Ektar and Portra color reproduction and fine grain. Or maybe not, and Velvia is the standard sometimes?
As for "do's" - small grain films 90% of the time, best prime lenses one can buy, accurate exposures, light covers, moderately tight framing (my 92% coverage focusing screen seems to cheat plastic scanning frames in the right way), best scanners (not flatbed), good archiving startegies (light-tight boxes to store color materials, avoiding moisture and dust). And making plenty of quality photos (isn't it against the medium?).
But what I know is from creative standpoint, I don't know how the other side rolls and what they may expect, want or demand to see.

Final rant: I have a feeling, that what I ask is not the question, that should be answered. I hope you're wiser than I am.

My wife and I are house-sitting in a small Canadian town, and we met one of the neighbours, who turns out to be an avid photographer while walking...

My wife and I are house-sitting in a small Canadian town, and we met one of the neighbours, who turns out to be an avid photographer while walking the dog.
When he found out I still shoot mostly film, he trotted out a number of reasons why this wasn't a good idea. The last one, was that he was concerned about the environmental impact of analogue, and felt much better shooting digitally. He also said he has over 30,000 images on file, and has to buy a better, (his third), laptop. That seems kinda polluting to me, but, the best was when I was out for a walk the next day and passed him digging in his garden. I stopped for a chat, and spied a huge pickup truck and a matching gigantic house trailer in the driveway. I asked if he had visitors and it turns out that no, that's their home-away-from-home which they take to Arizona every winter.
From where we are to Arizona is a five day drive, at probably 10 miles per gallon, if that. Never mind the building of these behemoths and the servicing.
But by jove, my shooting analogue is a bad thing for the environment. I didn't bother to say anything, because he probably wouldn't have understood anyway.
It's a funny old world.

I'd imaging the 12 gauge one would work particularly well, just rest it with the laser pointing upwards, place a mirror in your carrier, etc..
Easier than building a laser diode driver for one of those cheapies, easier than mounting a laser diode perfectly 90deg. to your baseboard, etc.
Cheap (from China) on the *bay*.. just a thought.

I am offering a Schneider Symmar-S Multicoated 300mm 5.6 lens in a Sinar DB board (the type with the manual override that lets you set the aperture on the board itself). The glass is in *mint* condition and comes with both original caps. The only thing about the lens that is not as-new is the beginnings of Schneideritis on the barrel inside both elements. It is more progressed in the back than the front but nowhere near as bad as I have seen on other lenses. And of course this is irrelevant as it has no impact on the performance. Just full disclosure for those who are picky (i.e. who plan to collect rather than use!)

The DB board is in mint condition also, and comes in a mint Sinar DB storage box.

I bought this because I wanted to swap the elements out into a Copal 3 shutter that I have. But it turns out that my "Copal 3" shutter is actually a mis-labelled Copal 3S...the mounting threads are 56mm not the 58mm required for this lens. At this point it would be faster and easier for me to sell this in the DB mount and buy a 300mm already in a shutter (so I know it actually fits!). I paid $250 on flea-bag (er, ebay) for this, plus $100 in shipping and duty. I'll eat the latter...I just want my $250 back.

If you have the rig to use this, or if you have a 4.5" Packard, or a spare Copal 3/Ilex 4 shutter kicking around then this is a great deal on an amazing piece of glass.

Pictures and shipping estimate to follow. Located in Toronto - local pickup is most welcome. Thanks!

I have a Schneider Symmar 240mm f5.6 convertible lens for sale. When you unscrew the front element the rear element alone becomes a 420mm f12 lens....

I have a Schneider Symmar 240mm f5.6 convertible lens for sale. When you unscrew the front element the rear element alone becomes a 420mm f12 lens. But you probably knew that already! Both configurations cover 4x5 with loads of movements and will cover 8x10 with a bit of room to spare. This is a great 8x10 lens as it covers both slightly wide and portrait focal lengths. The lens is mounted on a Sinar DB board, so you will need a Sinar system to use it, or else re-locate it into an appropriate shutter.

Both the front and rear element groups have some haze, but it is NOT fungus. If you do some homework on these original Symmar lenses you find that there is "off gassing" inside over time, from the paint on the inside of the barrels. It can be cleaned with lens dis-assembly but in truth it doesn't show up on the images or reduce contrast significantly, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

The price reflects both the condition of the glass and the requirement to have a Sinar to use this. It is a great deal on a great lens.

Pictures and shipping quote to follow. Thanks!

This is the 81-01 model that does not use a loading tray. Works fine, I tested it with some old 8x10 OHP Polaroid that was no good, but it showed the rollers work. Do a search on LFF and you will find my result, the pods were dried out.

Comes with OE instruction manual, one matching Polaroid film holder and power cord.

Gears are fine. You push the button for 1 second and it pulls the neg and pos through the rollers, very quickly. Then you wait while it develops in the covered rear compartment.

The little spring powered timer does not work. Use a separate timer of any kind. You are timing the development time, it varies, depending on film type.

This thing is heavy.

Unless you have used one, read the instructions 5 times and then read them again. It is not difficult, but it is not intuitive.

$600, you pay PayPal and USPS Priority shipping.
A good model if you're starting with large format, with a sturdy metal frame and a full range of movements of the standards (see photo #3)! The back rotates for both portrait and landscape images, and the bail handle makes loading & unloading a holder very easy.

As part of dropping all my post-1945 Japanese cameras, I am shedding almost all of my Konica I model variants.

All units right now on the "chopping block" can be seen in this list:http://tinyurl.com/ae36zhr

If you are unsure about the Konica I model variations / typology, please see here: http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Konica_I

I would prefer to swap for pre-1945 Rokuoh Sha / Konishiroku cameras, but I am also interested in assorted paraphernalia (e.g. film, paper, brochures, negative sleeves, medals etc etc).

Outright sales are fine, of course.

Please PM me if you are interested in one or more of the units.

Cheers,
Dirk

Check out my video series on my giant cyanotypes. I'm still new to the process, so I'm kinda learning as I go along and sharing my tips and learning from my mistakes.

I've gotten my time management perfected. If it's sunny out, I can come home during my lunch break and make 2-3 prints.

Yeah, we have moved!! We sold the gallery and have moved to a new place. Lots of natural acreage with hundreds of trees, a fire pit, trail down to the river and much more. We are loving it. Already put in a dark room and the wife is working on her crafts room. From my office window I see one of our decks and forest and a horse paddock with 3 horses running around like crazy. I think I can finally settle down This place is a photographers heaven, with lots of wild life. Miss the gallery, but this is sure nice. Don

Hi,

I want to try Photogravure to get the feel of the process. Currently I'm in the exchange students program in Germany and have access to Intaglio workshop here with all the equipment needed for the printing part (including aquatint). Do you know an instructor for Photogravure in Germany (or any close by country)? (I already contacted Peter Moseley but he is not available at this time). If not, I thought of trying myself but have some questions:

Is it possible to use zinc plates instead of copper to save some moeny?
Do the acid baths must be ferric chloride or is it possible to work with nitric acid too?

If I make the tissue myself, what should be its dry/wet height?

On the web it seems everyone is using potassium dichromate bath to sensitize the tissue. Is it possible to use spirit sensitizing with ammonium dichromate like in carbon printing?

[I have little experience with carbon transfer and intaglio]

Regards,
Omer

This short film called "Patient Process" was mentioned on the ALT-PHOTO mailing list: http://vimeo.com/65108090

"Very cool video of photographer John Bladen Bentley of Toronto with his 8x10 Deardorff and his color carbon (UltraStable) prints"

Description on Vimeo: John Bladen Bentley is a Toronto-based photographer who uses an antique 8x10 Deardorff large format camera to capture beauty in the most unlikely places. He develops his photos on print using a colour carbon transfer process which give his photos a richness in colour and permanency. It's a time-consuming process that requires five days to make one print. This was part of commission by The Revue Film Society and Revue Cinema in Toronto highlighting two photographers for a show called 'Persistence of Vision' that is part of the Contact Photography Festival.

John says excactly why I like analogue & large format photography: "I use large format because it slows you down and it makes you look".

Nuff said!!

It's a RR that says Williams, Brown, and Earle, Philadelphia on it.
The lens is 6", f4

The glass is very nice, and the outer cosmetics are pretty good as well.
It's unique in that it has a chromed barrel. This lens is very sharp.
