Difference between US aperture stops and regular aperture stops

I was recently told by the person repairing my Kodak #8 Premo plate camera that the aperture stops are US format and the crossover with regular f-stops is f16.Can anyone explain what the difference is between US stops and f stops?

    Thanks

    Doug

    If I remember correctly:

    US - 'Normal'

    16 - 16
    8 - 11
    4 - 8
    2 - 5.6
    1 - 4

    I have a Wray enlarging lens with the 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 markings.

Thanks, I always wondered how the US system and the standard aperture system compared.
