Linux and Scanning prints
Anyone else use your scanner through Linux? Have any suggestions on good scanning software? Or do you re-boot into Windows to use the OEM's diver and software?
I recently purchased an Epson Perfection 4490 and am looking for a good way to use it. Not sure if "ICE" and other features work through Linux or not.

Have a look at the SANE project (Scanner Access Now Easy): http://www.sane-project.org/
I did a little work on it about 6 years back when it was in it's infancy. Back then it was a PAIN to get their code to compile - one of my worst ever compiling experiences, but once I got their libs up I was able to write a front end pretty quickly.
They've come a long way since then, and are the first stop for linux scanning.
Personally I've moved on to MacOSX... Apple fruitiness with Unix goodness inside...

The latest distributions work quite well with scanners.
I tried my 3170 on SuSE 9.3 and that all worked fine. Vuescan should work too.

A little late on this, but if you don't mind spending a little $$ then Vuescan from Hamrick software works well with most scanners under Linux. See http://hamrick.com/ The website lists the suported scanners.
They have a free trial version, then you pay for the serial number that unlocks it for full use. Good thing is that if you have the serial number then they allow you to use the Windoze and Mac versions as well. Its excellent software and usually much better than the manufacturer's drivers.
