I had a cool (maybe) idea that might actually work. How about putting your negative in an enlarger and projecting it into a flatbed scanner? You could get a 50mb scan out of a 35mm negative, with no problems capturing the grain. You could focus on a piece of paper, and then figure out the focus correction to get it onto the CCD.

BTW I would just try it myself but I don't have a scanner.
