Depth of focus issues with microtek 1000xl ??

When scanning slides with my Microtek Scanmaker 1000XL, I notice that the resulting image does not appear to be in sharp focus. Sharpening helps some but fundamentally I question if I should pull the film out of the mount.
The slide sits on the scanner glass, it's not elevated at all, and I know scanners do have some degree of DOF, but is this a DOF problem, or is that just what I can expect?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you look on this page on Norman Koren's site, you'll find some info about finding the best focus with flatbeds - a lowly Epson in this case.
