    inkjet transparencies and cyanotypes

I have an older printer (HP 720 color). If I make B&W negative transparencies, will they work okay to do cyanotypes? I figure that cyanotypes take long enough exposures that density doesn't have to be great. Has anyone tried? I have used them to make contact prints on RC paper just like I would for a roll of film and they weren't horrible. I think it was about 6 sec at f8 for a close to 8x10.

    Bethe,

I can not say for sure but it probbly will not work. To make cyanotypes you need a negative with a high density range. Although I am not familiar with your printer, apparently none of the HP printers have inks with the UV density to maike good digital negatives.

But give it a try and report what you find.

I am sorry to hear that an HP printer will not make very good digital negs. I just bought some transparency material to give that a try and that is the type of printer I have. I think it's an HP 3750. Oh well, I'll still give it a try and see what happens.

I would also like to hear from Bethe if it worked or not.

    Good Luck Bethe.

I won't know until we have some sunny days on a weekend up here in New England. It may be awhile - it seems to be nice only when I have to go to work. I also have to find some appropriate beakers and such to mix the chemicals and coat the paper. On a side note, I'm going to use an instrument at work to see if UV is transmitted or blocked as compared to film - could be interesting.
