Linux anyone ?

Im a huge fan and supporter of Linux. However, it does have its drawbacks; namely hardware support. I finally plucked down some cash on an Epson 4870 scanner that is supported, and I plan on using the SANE driver for my backend, and VUEScan for the frontend.
Anyone else run this setup ? Unfortunately it seems as if Im stuck with Pshop 4.0, as that is the newest version that I can get WINE to run...Any other suggestions ?

I think GIMP would be a better solution than PS 4.0. Unfortunately, GIMP is an 8 bit app but so was PS 4.0.

It does irritate me that Adobe doesn't support Linux but then again I can understand why they don't since that part of the market seg is so much smaller than a Windows or Mac based product.

I'm not sure what CinePaint is capable of as far an image editor is concerned but I think it supports 16 bit files.

SANE has "complete" support for your scanner (w00t!).
I'd recommend GIMP. If you need 16bit, use Cinepaint (the new version, called Glasgow, is dues out in several days.. check http://cinepaint.org/ ).

I've run Photoshop 7 under Crossover Office, the commercial implementation of Wine. In fact they did some development for Disney in order for them to run PS and to standardise of the GNU Linux platform.

For some reason or another, I don't like GIMP at all (hence I didn't even bother to mention it). Im just not a fan.

I was a hardcore FreeBSD user for about six years, I started with 2.1.5 back in about 1996. I like(d) being able to run Linux applications seamlessly while taking advantage of the fbsd ports and packages. For me, FBSD was easier to administer and MUCH easier to install packages. Even now, running Windoze XP I miss XFree86.. Virtual Desktop Terminals, the uptime and stability. My box would run for weeks.. Sigh.

If I could get CS2 to run I'd switch in a heartbeat. I can get acceptable software for Linux for everything else. I have used Gimp but it just isn't the same.

I've got photoshop 7 running under wine. I am at work now, or I'd tell you which version of wine I am using. I am running it on a Gentoo workstation. Works great!

To be honest, most quick web photo stuff I use Gimp- specifically GimpShop, which makes Gimp's controls layout more like Photoshop. My big problems with Gimp is the limitation of not being able to use 16/48bit files. I think just 8/24bit are supported, and this is not adequate for most photographers, in my mind.
After a few manipulations with only 8 bits per channel, and you start to see a lot of the dreaded "toothy" gaps in your histogram....
