Need advice for 8x10 film scanner

I am looking for some suggestions as far as what scanner might do the trick for scanning 8x10 black and white negs. I'm not going digital in any sense, I simply want to scan negs for my web site and for organizing my images. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    grey area, anyone?

I've said it before, I'll say it again. A few weeks ago, I decided on the Epson V700 scanner. 35mm, 120, 4"x5" and even 8"x10". Haven't tried anything bigger than 6x6 (cm), but I think this is more than good enough if it's just for the web. Just my EUR 0,02.

Why bother scanning negatives for the web? I would propose to use a cheap flatbed (cheap wrt a flatbed with negative scanning or a film scanner) and scan a contact print instead. That should give you enough information for a Web image.

Something like Epson 4990 would be more than enough, about 600USD, and it can make decent scan from MF and larger negatives. 35mm are difficult.

Then there are Imacon stuff, but cheapest is about 7000 EURO.

And rst has point, for web is enough cheap flatbed scanner to scan contact copy, or cheap one with option for scanning negatives, and those can be found for 100USD. But, quality is proportional to price...

I am interested in answers to same question, and regarding the 4990 versus the V700, the difference in price is small, and the specs on the V700 seem better, that this is the way I am leaning.

As for making a contact print and scanning that, sure, good idea, but the nice thing about the two scanners mentioned above is that they'll also work for transparencies.

    I use a V750 M. I'm sure an Epson 4990 or V700 will work fine, too.

Technology is not a panacea. It alone will not move your art forward. Only through developing your own aesthetic - free from the tools that create it - can you find new dimension to your work.

For such a large format and web quality, any flatbed with film scan light source will be ok. If you're going to scan also 120 roll film or even 35mm, then it's better to purchase Epson 4870, 4990 or V700 that has linear light source. The shadow details are much better with these scanner than the ones of generation before.

The 750 fluid mounting tray isn't large enough for 8x10 use and the scanner bed isn't really large enough for your to safely fluid mount 8x10 to it. There just isn't much extra space to allow for excess fluid leakage.
