I've decided to drive as it gives me more flexibility, however, I thought I might spend a couple of extra days traveling back to Manchester. Can anyone recommend a photogenic place to stop on the way back?

The Forest of Dean, it's only a short distance from the M5, and it's quite varied.

Brian, you could try the Somerset Levels for something very different from Manchester and the Peak District.
Very, very flat with plenty of hedges and lots of sky - it would be a challenge.
In the same vicinity is Glastonbury Tor – which sticks up from the flat surrounding land like a beacon

I just notice that the trip falls on Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day 26/4

I may have missed this in the postings but ..... Does the event start on the Friday (day) or is the start considered to be at the evening on the Friday.
(It makes a difference to travel plans.)

We meet up Friday evening - usually in the Hotel Bar (if it has one) - you can tell its us - we are the ones with either Cameras or Prints to show each other
Saturday is usually a group photographic outing to two or more locations
Sunday - some people need to go home - so leave at various times of the day while those that remain find another two or three locations to shoot
Monday is dispersal day for the remainder of the group
How much before Fri evening you arrive & how soon after Monday morning you leave is of course a personal choice

Also if anyone is coming during the day on the Friday and would like to shoot something let me know and I would happy to meet up and point you in the right direction.
