help with calculating import charges

Being billed for VAT and duty seems to depend on the originator of the shipment too. Everything I've bought from KEH, even the lens which cost ~£25 + shipping, has been charged for. I would say more than 90% of items bought from ebay private sellers have come through with no charge.

I tried to get the VAT back on imported books and failed miserably when I ran into a wall of total indifference - but you might have more luck

That is legalized theft... However I have purchased imported books from the US above the standard 18 GBP VAT limit and not payed any import duty or VAT.
