    Light and Silver

    Light and Silver
Techniques for Film exposure and development

    July 21-24 2007 Tuition $140. Limited to 10 students

Exposure and development present many challenges for film photographers, yet
a properly exposed and developed negative is prerequisite for optimum print
quality. Well-exposed and developed negatives also make printing much
easier, faster and less costly. In this workshop, we will begin by
calibrating our light meters and learning how to establish personal ISO film
speeds. Building on this foundation, we will explore simple, reliable
techniques for determining the optimum exposure for virtually all lighting
conditions and subject matter. Next we will go on a field trip to expose
negatives, then into the darkroom to learn development techniques for
perfect negatives. Our film will be processed in WD2D+ , a superb
    pyrogallol-based developer.

This workshop is open to anyone with a film camera from 35mm to 4x5. It is
suitable not only for those with previous experience who want to refine
their skills, but for those who are ready to learn the classic joys of using
film. Each participant will be encouraged to bring and use their own
    developing tanks.

John Wimberley has photographed in black and white for 41 years. In the
1970's he introduced the first pyrogallol developer for modern films, and is
widely considered to be one of the finest living black and white printers in
the world. On the occasion of his first one-man show in 1973, Artweek
Magazine noted: "His prints are not merely technically correct, but
wonderfully alive." John has been called "One of America's preeminent
landscape photographers", and his work has been extensively published and
    exhibited around the world.
