New Nature Photography Workshop Business

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to let everyone know here at APUG that my friend Charles Campbell, the author of the Amphoto book The Backpacker's Handbook to Photography and I are starting a new Workshop business that we are hoping to have underway for 2009. Charles has 20 years of experience in Workshops and I have some experience as well.

We anticipate advertising in Outdoor Photographer Magazine and also through and at the meeting for NANPA (North American Nature Photographers Association) in February, 2009.

The name of the business is Nature Photo Workshops and the link to the website which is only in preliminary form as Charlie works on it is:

The workshop locations are to be all over the US but locations and dates are at best tentative at this point.

Though the business is and will be more oriented toward Digital Photography, than film based photography, film shooters will be welcome. Charlie has switched entirely to digital, but I expect to be carrying a digital camera and at least one film based camera to every workshop class. Both of us are using the new Canon point and shoot Powershot G9 as our digital cameras. I expect to be carrying either my Mamiya 7 II or one of my Leica R series cameras as well. The 4 X 5 cameras may also be brought for specific workshops.

We already have a fair number of sponsors including Gitzo/Bogen, Kirk Enterprises, and the Sierra Club. We hope to be able to make donations from our business back to the Sierra Club and the Nature Conservancy.

Please forgive us for working so heavily with digital equipment but we would like to make the business a success and that is where most interest lies at this point. We will be explaining things regarding Photoshop CS3 which will not only be valuable to digital photographers, but also to film shooters that scan their work, particularly from transparencies.

We are making our final plans for our workshop schedule shortly (need to make some tweaks and minor changes). We will be making arrangements for advertising in Outdoor Photographer the print magazine as well as the online version.

Also, we intend to participate at the NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) annual meeting Feb. 18-21, 2009 - Albuquerque, NM.

I attended a couple of bird workshops a few years ago near Orlando, Florida, where I was the only film shooter in one, and in the other there was one attendee and the instructor's assistant also shooting film, and there was no problem, since the techniques discussed were mostly applicable to both. I went really just to get access to the locations on short notice while I was tagging along with my wife who was attending a conference in the area. I had my New F-1 and 600/4.5 and a 4x5" Gowland PocketView, and both of the instructors were pleased to have a little variety in the group.

Thanks very much for the well wishes. The economy is quite tough right now, but hopefully we will weather the storm, find enough participants and will be a success. Charlie has a mailing list of past participants that have been wanting additional workshops and I have have been telling people about them at Art shows. Also, hopefully the OP readers, both on-line and print magazine as well as members of NANPA will fill up the classes.

I am also considering getting a booth at the NANPA convention in February. The problem for me is getting my merchandise to the show. It's a long drive from Portland to Albuquerque.

In addition to advertising in Outdoor Photographer, you might also consider Nature Photographer magazine. Their circulation is a lot smaller (36,000) than Outdoor Photographer (219,000), but so are their ad rates. And, their readership certainly fits your target demographic. I just purchased a year's worth of 1/4 page ads starting with the upcoming Winter issue.

And, even though most of your workshop participants are digishooters, you might also consider becoming an APUG sponsor. It's one of the best bargains out there in targeted online advertising.

Hi Kerry,

Thank you very much for the encouragement and the suggestions. Yes, it is a long distance from Portland to Albuquerque. We are going to request displaying close to Bill Nordstrom, who is my printer and who will be preparing several of our display pieces.

I will have to fly in from eastern PA, around Philadelphia to pick Charlie up in Denver and we will travel from there.

I look forward to finally having the opportunity to meet you. I wish you the best of luck with your new venture. I may even bring the Toho FC-45X (rather than Linhof Technikardan 45S) along with my Mamiya 7II and the little Canon G9 for our booth display.
