Spirit of Structure workship with Tillman Crane
SPIRIT OF STRUCTURE: ABANDONED FARMS OF NORTH DAKOTA
May 3 – 7, 2010
Rugby, North Dakota
A unique opportunity to photograph in a number of abandoned homesteads, nearly deserted towns and farm museums in north central North Dakota. Some buildings are mere shells while others still contain the relics of every day life. This is a shooting workshop and all camera formats welcome. There is no processing available for film users so if you wish to view work on a daily basis you are encouraged to bring a digital camera for previewing your work. For those working digitally I encourage you to also bring a lap top computer to view and share your work. All participants are asked to bring a small portfolio of work to share with the group.
The Spirit of Structure workshops are centered on photographing in the man-made environment. Despite the perception that photographing buildings falls under the genre of “architectural” photography in truth these structures also provide rich opportunities for the genres of landscape, portrait or still life. In other words, they provide something of interest for everyone.
This workshop will be based in and around Rugby ND. Rugby is the geographical center of North America, with a population of approximately 3000. We will be working in isolated farmhouses and barns, a small prairie church, schoolhouse, grain elevators, a town that is virtually a ghost town, and a living history museum on prairie life. Thanks to the efforts of my friend, Dan Smith, we have obtained the permission of private landowners to explore these buildings. Some are door and windowless ruins. Others are more completely preserved. Some still contain the belongings of the long gone families. We will ask ourselves questions about the nature of the structures and use them as sets for created or recreated memories. Farmhouses, barns and outbuildings hold the clues to the history of those who lived in them as well as our own personal sense of history.
We will have the opportunity each day to work in at least two locations. All locations will be out of Rugby, with a travel time of 15 minutes to an hour away. If you find that one house in particular speaks to your creative self more than others, you will be able to return to that location several times. In the evenings we will review the day’s work and share the portfolio work you bring.
