Unfortunately EMP devices able to achive this sort of damage would not be portable. Besides the original article doesn't even mention EMP devices, it refers to some optical method of interference:
"The system then shoots a tightly targeted beam of light at the lens. The result: Your secret picture looks like a flashlight beam -- and nothing else"

So could you get around this technology by using a film camera?

I can see many Apug memeber buying this. But serioulsy if the technology can be got round by use of film cameras then that is what people will do, might generate some sales.

I can imagine park rangers setting this up at Half Dome so they can discourage people from hanging around that area too much Then the'll wonder how you can see the LCD on the back of that honking 8x10 camera you have.

There's an article about this in the latest issue of Amateur photographer (Back page by Roger Hicks).

Yet another reason why film is better than digital.

Definetely film wins over digital here [yet again].

And, to PeterB., it is probably possible to design an EMP device that can fry (or at least seriously, temporarily screw up) a digicam form maybe 5 or 10 feet; you might be able to fit it in a duffel bag, backpack or large breifcase. Really all you'd need would be a pre-charged capacitor bank connected to a big coil, triggered by a big SCR or spark cagp However, destroying equipment wasn't the point of the device, and this is not the forum to discuss EM weapons...
