Hope I can make it down at least on Sunday. The 65mm I ordered a few days ago from KEH should be here on Tuesday. Would love to give it a workout in the hills.

    Welcome,

You are invited to be part of the First Annual Frozen Film Shoot in Hocking Hills Park and surrounding areas. Shooting in the cold dead of winter can be extremely rewarding and challenging at the same time.

(First off - Please file for an access permit from Ohio DNR for Saltpetre Caves, Scheick Hollow and Little Hollow state preserves for “daylight hours” “hiking and photography” for the dates from “2/11-13/2011” if you are thinking of going but not even certain. Form is linked off this page. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/tabid/863/Default.aspx
Send to Judi Love, Fax # 614-265-7202, or email scanned form to judi.love@dnr.state.oh.us You can tell her you are with me for the photo trip.)

So here are the 5 Ws

Base Camp for the trip is the Holiday Inn. Free breakfast for guests and if you have to cancel you can do so up to 6pm your first night stay.

We will be putting in reservations so we need an accurate count 2 days earlier , they can be very busy

    Saturday 2/12/2011:
Saturday morning breakfast for Holiday Inn guests at the hotel or if we have several people staying all over the place (Cabins, Holiday Inn, The Baymont, Inn Tower Motel and such) then we will all meet at Bush's Restaurant 428 East Front Street in Logan. 740-385-7639 They open at 6 AM on Saturday. We could meet then or at 7 AM. (another reason for confirming who and how many are going)
    http://bushsrestaurant.com/bushs/index.htm

First outing is to the Rock House. It is located on SR 374. Rock house has a lot of history and is just incredible. Trails should be passable to it with great caution due to ice and snow. Some history is here: http://www.wyrickshillsidelodge.com/...rock-house.htm

I have some photos of Rock House and other places in Hocking areas in an online gallery:
    http://leegephart.smugmug.com/Art/Ho...93681650_hEoTL

Those who filed for a State of Ohio Department of Natural Resources permit to enter Saltpetre Caves will join us from Rock House to a very private and rarely traveled trip to the caves located on Big Pine Road at the green post across from the cement bridge. You must have a permit to enter this controlled area. Woe to you if a state ranger catches you without a permit. You will find a permit application here:
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/tabid/863/Default.aspx You will need to do this ASAP see above.

Those without permits can go to Conkle’s Hollow while those with permits will be at the caves. Conkle’s Hollow is at the intersection of RT 374 and Big Pine Road.

From there we will go inside and warm up for lunch just past Ash Cave at the Grouse Nest restaurant located at the Hocking Hills Resort. 25780 Liberty Hill Road. 740-332-4501. http://www.grousenest.com/
Make no mistake when they say Liberty Hill Road… It’s a real hill for your car to climb.

After a chance to warm up, eat lunch at the grouse nest and enjoy your favorite beverage by the fireplace we will go into Ash Cave for more spectacular photography. Ash cave is on SR 56 just next to where we eat lunch.

From Ash cave we will go to Cedar Falls for our last expedition of Saturday. Cedar Falls is on SR 374.

Dinner will be at the Millstone BBQ 12790 Grey St. Logan. 740-385-5341 http://www.millstonebbq.com/ Best BBQ and beverages in the area. This is right next to the Holiday Inn Hotel.

    Sunday 2/13/2011:
Same criteria for breakfast as Saturday, Morning after breakfast for Holiday Inn guests at the hotel or if we have several people staying all over the place (Cabins, Holiday Inn, The Baymont Inn, Inn Tower Motel and such) we should all meet at Bush's Restaurant 428 East Front Street in Logan. 740-385-7639 We could meet at 7 AM.
    http://bushsrestaurant.com/bushs/index.htm

We will head out after breakfast to Rock Bridge preserve. This is off RT 33 just west of Logan. There is a small sign along State Route 33 heading west that informs you where to turn to get to the preserve. Just as most all locations this is a fairly strenuous hike. There are no restroom facilities there, just a parking area at the trailhead.
    http://www.hockinghills.com/parks/p_rbridge.htm
    and http://www.hockinghills.com/rock_bridge.html

From there we could meet for lunch, second breakfast or coffee at the Silver Diner of Hocking Hills just west of Rock Bridge on Rt 33. The diner is at 26784 Route 33. 740-385-9495

Some may choose to head home at that time or go on to Scheick Hollow and Little Hollow state preserves. Directions to follow once forwarded to me from the State of Ohio DNR. These are permit only areas. One may also return to Old Man’s Cave or any other location they wish to see or visit again

This is a totally voluntary trip, please be aware of the dangers of snow and ice covered rocky terrain and be responsible for yourself and your hiking partners. No one should be out hiking without a buddy for safety sake. We can point you to some great locations but can not nor will not take responsibility for your safety, so we need everyone to be extremely diligent and watch out of dangers.

We hope to see you at this exciting winter wonderland of great photographic locations. Please PM me with your RSVP that includes your name, address, cell number and an emergency contact person.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Our Frozen Film shoot is this weekend. Still plenty of time for those who may have other plans to still change their minds and get out and shoot some frozen waterfalls, caves, rock formations and take some great hikes. Look forward to your joining us.

Images from the Frozen film Shoot

We would like to show you what we saw down there in Hocking County.

Yes it was very cold, lots of snow and ice. We learned how to travel with trecking poles, a tripod and a camera. The trecking poles helped keep us stable on the ice and snow covered hills. You can see one in Sue's hands in one of the photos.

Outstanding frozen water falls !!! There was the biggest ice cube at Ash Cave, you can see from the photo with someone down by it, the image if Sue and I does not give it proper perspective.

Here are some neg scans from the trip.

Looks great. Sorry I missed it, but I have been taking care of 'Aged Relative,' as Dickens puts it. I probably should have gotten one of those old-folks-services firms to take care of her for the weekend.

I have found these to be great for walking on snow and ice:
