NE OH Gathering, May 6-8, 2011

I am wondering if this would interest our group? I’ve been asked to find the spot on the OH & Erie Canal that would offer the most potential to a group of ULF shooters. What I offered has lots of swings tilts and stuff, but also lots of history, angles and architectural drama. Would a stroll down this part of the towpath be of interest to our group? We could get there from here in less than 30 minutes or perhaps 20 minutes from breakfast at the Richfield Family Restaurant.

Here is how I described it to the ULF group.
“I am so happy to share with you the history, entropy, architecture,
formalism, rehabilitation, new life of the OH & Erie Canal. It has
been photographically and historically fascinating for me over the
past four years and 150 images. The canal goes from Cleveland through
the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, through industrial Akron and on
down through farm land to the Ohio River. We will go to a point on
the flat towpath where the whole canal, which takes its water from the
Cuyahoga River, is bridged by aqueduct across another river. We will
walk under an ancient railroad bridge coming out by another RR bridge
supported in the middle of the Cuyahoga River by boulders within a
wooden beam frame. That bridge sight line will intersect with an
arched multilane concrete overpass. Around the next curve we will go
under an interstate on ramp supported by multiple concrete columns.
We will encounter all of this and more within a mile of our parking
lot next to the local police department.

Here we are at the 2011 FAVA show. The middle 7x17 picture is a location on this tour. "Around the next curve we will go under an interstate on ramp supported by multiple concrete columns."

If you can find us a fast place for dinner Friday I hope to be up Friday evening, Sat and head home Sunday after our normal breakfast it looks like.

Thanks Lee. I was begining to wonder if there was still interest in the event. In Montrose there is pretty heavy Friday dinner traffic. I think the key to faster speed may be earlier dinner. When do you think you will be here?

Thanks Mike. I recently walked the part of the towpath I described just to be sure nothing had changed. There are some amazing bridge structures, generations of transportation, all intersecting in a short bit of space. For much of that mile the towpath is the only thing separating the Cuyahoga River from the OH & Erie Canal. Bridges of many different designs are crossing over and intersecting each other.

If others are interested we can go Saturday morning.
