    Timothy Greenfield Sanders and a dig. SLR ???

    I've been quite (VERY) impressed with TGS's 11x14 images in the past and even somewhat on the 8x10 work on porn stars--great imagery but just not my first choice in subject matter. Now I've seen at least two different recent mag. articles with accompanying images shot with a digital "middle of the road" SLR--Pentax *ist IIRC. I'm scratching my balding head on this one---How can a man of his talents move from 11x14/8x10 to a little digital 8 MP (I think) toy on a peewee tripod ?? There is no doubt the man is very talented but "WHY" this particular move ? This defies logic IMO !

    Well, I can not speak to Mr. Sanders reasoning. However, there is a lot to be said in going to digital capture and then doing alt process from enlarged negs...especially when one sees the number of suppliers shrinking by the day.
    Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed.

    Ummm, because he feels that it is the right tool for the job? Seriously, I don't understand the confusion. Photographers use what they feel is the best for them, none of us are in a position to question his methods since we aren't him...

    why not? a good artist will use whatever he feels the need to use

    kinda the opposite of the people who bemoan the loss of their favourite materials

    Greenfield-Sanders isn't an alt-process printer, and much of his style is connected to the decision to try using a big 11x14" studio camera when such things were very much out of fashion, and sticking with it for a long time, so that his portraits have a consistency of form.

    I suspect he's experimenting and having some fun with the little camera.

    Just a curiousity on my part because I find his LF work so impressive in most cases----- that's such a drastic change from ULF !!

    When I arrive at the point in my carreer where I can give up commercial work, and don't have to shoot digital anymore there better be "Brunner dumps digital-goes film" threads.

    I was talking with Robert Parkeharrison lastnight (If your not familar with his work, look it up) about how he has always worked with the large format pinhole camera and then produced paper negatives and made traditional silver prints in the darkroom. This was the "look" to his work for most his career, but just recently he started working with a digital SLR and making inkjet COLOR prints. He commented on how whats most important is the meaning and imagry, and not the physical object of the print. He feels the two should work in harmony with each other, and when someone views his work, they are looking at the idea, message and image...not the process.

    When viewing his new color work, he was true. One is so interested with the image that the technical process is overlooked.
