Southeast Pennsylvania - items of note
The Allentown Art Museum has an exhibit still up to Sunday, January 13th: Walker Evans & The American Social Landscape Photographers.
I hope to get my fat little body up there yet ...
... landmark photographs of Easton, Bethlehem, and other nearby locations were part of his work that changed the course of photographic history, especially in America. In the 1930s, Evans created these and other images as part of federally sponsored programs that hired photographers to document America during the Great Depression.
At the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, there is Making Magic: Beauty in Word and Image up through March 31, 2013. This is a series of images and accompanying poetry, including photographs by Andrea Baldeck · Susan Bank · Michael Becotte · Will Brown · Howard Brunner · Paula Chamlee · Ed Eckstein · Lisa Tyson Ennis · Emmet Gowin · Jeff Hurwitz · Bruce Katsiff · Stephen Perloff · Peter K. Philbin · Michael A. Smith · Sandy Sorlien · John Weiss · Stephen Guion Williams. I suspect at least a few of those names will ring a bell. This one I saw yesterday and it includes a fair amount of traditional materials.
At this same venue, there is a show Parting Gifts: Artists Honor Bruce Katsiff, Director/CEO, 1989 – 2012 where artists have donated work to the permanent collection in honor of the retiring curator. There is work from several photographers in the show, including that of Susan Fenton illustrated at the link. (My aging brain can't recall the others -- shoulda taken notes!) The show has been extended to February 4th.
And coming up at the Michener, opening January 19th: The Mind's Eye: 50 Years of Photography by Jerry Uelsmann, running through April 28th. There are some lectures and events associated with that that might be of interest.
And at the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Treasures of the Alfred Stieglitz Center: Photographs from the Permanent Collection including work by Stieglitz and others, up until April 7th
As editor of a newsletter for a local art club, I try to pay some attention to stuff at local museums (with varying degrees of success). I note that some of my previous posts along these lines have received 180 views, so I hope that's good, even though I've not seen any "wow, I caught that Tuesday and it was great" posts.
