Thymol
Will more than the recomended amount of thymol have an undesireable effect?
-
It might cause difficulty coating. You may get oil like droplets form on the coating. They can be reduced by changing the type or amount of surfactant used in the melted emulsion.

I jus used the thymol in 100% isopropyl alcohol. Making small bathes of emulsion that might use a half drop, I add one or two anyway.
What would you use as a suficant? I did'nt think I was having any coating problems.
-
If the emulsion repels from the surface of the film or paper, then it needs a surfactant.
How much thymol in IPA is what is important. Not knowing that, I can't tell how much you have used.

I used the same concentration you said touse,10%.

I use 1 drop of 10% Thymol in Iso Propyl Alcohol in every 100 grams of 10% gelatin. If you use less, the gelatin will keep for a shorter time, and if you use more it will keep longer and may alter the spreading characteristics.
