An Idea - DRUG in Adelaide

    Howdy all,

A fellow member (and president of the Blackwood photography club), MattC and myself were having a bit of a chat the other day.

We were thinking that it might be a good idea to possibly organise a Dark Room User Group in Adelaide. Initially, it would be about sharing ideas, talking about prints and techniques (I am not too keen on competitions) and even about using collective numbers to help continue with our hobby.

What I am keen on is thoughts from those of you who may be members of similar groups in Australia (I know that there are a few hear part of a group in Melbourne similar to this). What does your group offer that makes it attractive to you? What things don't work for your group?

Any feedback would be appreciated. At this stage, we are keen just to get ideas and if we think that it could work, we will promote and post about starter meetings (I know that there are one or two members from Adelaide here!)

    Cheers

WCC in Perth have an *awesome* darkroom... and of their ~150 members, I was the only user of it, so I don't know that a shared darkroom would get a lot of use. There was one other regular film shooter in the club (who taught me how to print) but he of course had his home darkroom.

I should have mine setup in the next few months (pending some carpentry & new sink) and I know a couple of people with their own, but I'm wondering what purpose this DRUG would serve to people who pretty much know how to print and who would just ask technique questions on APUG? Is it a discussion/Q&A resource? Group chemical buys? Shared facilities?

I'm in - workshops could be run and bulk chemical buys organised. And having a coffee with other people who are interested in the same things you are really makes you feel like less of a loon, you take it for granted when all your friends are artists.
The Analogue Laboratory, or 'so you built a darkroom in an old factory in the industrial zone'.
    Blog thing!.

    Worry less. Photograph more.

Polyglot, I must admit that having a shared facility was something that I had in mind a long time ago, but the reality of it, is as you have described. Will it get used? Then there is the cost (Surely the only way to do it cheaply would be to set it up in either Elizabeth or Hackham.....and then I am sure you would get plenty of other attention for other chemical uses...). Who never knows, but I think that this would beyond the scope of such a group.

Fleath, I think you have hit the nail on the head. I am sure that as a collective, the purchase of supplies would be a high priority, especially for staples such as Rapid Fix, non specialised developers, film, ect. I also am more looking at the social aspect and shared knowledge. I would imagine that meetings would be more of a monthly, or bi-monthly period. I would also suggest that locations would need to be as central to the Adelaide metro area as possible.

    Keep the ideas coming

    Hey All,
For me I think the idea would be (in no particular order) a) share knowledge on techniques and processes, b) discuss prints in a non competitive environment, c) arrange group purchases, and d) socialise with like minded people!

As far as facilities, I don't think a central communal facility would ever work, although I might contact SAPF to see what hey have. Instead I am sure there are enough people with darkrooms (mines almost there!) that would be happy to share their space with people once they get to know them.

Well if it goes ahead, by all means count me in. If there are discussions, I shall try to be there (it would need to be weekends) and I'd generally be in on shared film/chem buys, though I just spent nearly $500 on film at ag-photographic last week so probably need to hold back for a little while.

I am *very* interested in getting E-6 (in the next couple months as I just bought 20 rolls of Velvia/Provia and don't want to pay $10/roll for dev), C-41 and RA-4 (in the next 6-8 months as I would like to move away from the costs of E-6 and be able to print optically) chems so if we can find a way to swing that, I will be all over it. I believe that C-41 and E-6 fixer are identical to B&W fix (ammonium thiosulphate in all cases) and the colour versions are much much cheaper due to being bought in bulk by labs. I will need new fix very soon and was planning on doing that.

Edit: I know a couple of non-APUG darkroom regulars (decades of experience and quite a few exhibitions each) in the hills and will email them a link to this to see if they'd be interested.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I don't know how practical the idea of a shared darkroom would be, but I'm interested in Adelaide-based general darkroom chat. Although my "darkroom" isn't getting much use this time of year, too hot!

    Hi Guys,

Just a bit of a bump and to say that the idea has not been forgotten. MattC and myself have been chatting about this over the last week or so and we are keen to probably start organising it. We are after any suitable venue, so if anyone knows anyone, or has a suggestion (a back room of a pub would be ideal) that would be based around central Adelaide and is cheap (preferrably FREE!), please let me know.

Once a venue has been found, I'll post here. We will also put up some notices around the local camera clubs/local flickr groups, etc.

    Cheers

G'day guys. I'm in Melbourne, so It's unlikely I'd use your darkroom but I could pad out any buys of chemicals for color neg. (C-41) processing.

    Peter.
