    Ansco Fixing Baths

Here are some Ansco Fixing Bath recipes for your consideration. Remember to add ingredients in the order given and to exercise extreme caution with these recipes.

    ANSCO FIXING BATH 201

A standard acid hardening and fixing bath for films and papers. It has excellent shelf and pot life and can be used extensively before discarding is required. When it reaches that point it will become cloudy. Discard at this point.

    SOLUTION 1

    WATER(52C OR 125F)-----------500.0 cc
    SODIUM THYOSULFATE (HYPO)--240.0 cc

    SOLUTION 2

    WATER(52C OR 125F)-----------150.0 cc
    SODIUM SULFITE,DESSICATED---15.0 g
    ACETIC ACID (28%)(*)----------45.0 cc
    POTASSIUM ALUM---------------15.0 g

Add solution 2 into solution 1 and add water to make one full litre.
    DO NOT DILUTE FOR USE.
Standard fixing time at 20C is from 5'00" to 10'00".

    ANSCO FIXING BATH 202

This is a high temp fixer for films. It will stain papers. The color of the bath when mixed is green and this is intended. When maximum hardening is required, the film should be rinsed in a chrome alum stop bath before being transferred to THIS fixer.

    SOLUTION 1

    WATER(52C OR 125F)-----------2.5 L
    SODIUM THIOSULFATE(HYPO)---960.0 g
    SODIUM SULFITE,DESSICATED--60.0 g
ADD COLD WATER TO MAKE-----3.0 L

    SOLUTION 2

    WATER(52C OR 125F)-------1.0 L
    POTASSIUM CHROME ALUM--60.0 g
    SULFURIC ACID(C.P.)--------8.0 cc

ALWAYS ADD SULFURIC ACID INTO THE WATER SLOWLY WHILE STIRRING THE SOLUTION. ADDING WATER INTO SULFURIC ACID CAN CAUSE THE SOLUTION TO BOIL AND MAY RESULT IN VERY SERIOUS BODILY INJURY. PLEASE, EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION.

Slowly pour solution 2 into solution 1 while rapidly stirring the latter.
    DO NOT DILUTE FOR USE.
DO NOT DILUTE THE CHROME ALUM AT A TEMP HIGHER THAN 66C (150F).
Always rinse films thoroughly before fixing. Normal fixing time is from 5'00" to 10'00" at 20C.

    ANSCO FIXING BATH 203

This is a non-hardening acid fixing bath used mainly with papers that have prehardened emulsions.

    STOCK SOLUTION

    SODIUM THIOSULFATE(HYPO)-475.0 g
    POTASSIUM METABISULFITE--67.5 g
ADD COLD WATER TO MAKE---1.0 litre

The potassium metabisulfite should be added to the hypo solution only after it has cooled. Dilute the stock solution 1:1 with water. Normal fixing time is from 5'00" to 10'00" at 20C.

    ANSCO FIXING BATH 204

This is a buffered acid hardening fixing bath; it does not become cloudy with use, simply replace when fixing time becomes to long in duration. Unused, ut has an indefinite shelf life.

    WATER(52C OR 125F)----------750.0 cc
    SODIUM THIPSULFATE(HYPO)--240.0 g
    SODIUM SULFITE--------------15.0 g
    ACETIC ACID(28%)(*)---------75.0 cc
    BORAX------------------------15.0 g
    POTASSIUM ALUM-------------15.0 g
ADD COLD WATER TO MAKE----1.0 litre

Stir rapidly while mixing these ingredients.
    DO NOT DILUTE FOR USE.
Normal fixing time fotr this fixer is from 5'00" to 10'00" at 20C.

    * - 28% ACETIC ACID
Using Glacial Acetic Acid, add three parts GAC to eight parts water to arrive at a 28% solution. Pour carefully and slowly while stirring the water. Remember to add the acid to the water. Adding water to the acid can cause splashing of extremely caustic material.
    Thank you.
