I found this effect in photos of fireworks - and it was explained here on APUG (thanks Akki14 and Photo Engineer!). Then I used it as a planned effect during a solar eclipse:

Funny, some of the early run of the new BMC camera (Black Magic Cinema) had that effect with hot spots. Digital version I suppose.
