Since you are taking some notes Ralph-please consider including some of the great information ( charts ) on the web site into the book. Also, if the book will be hard cover, opening the book to copy some of the material you include in the appendix might become more difficult. So, ask the printer to move the material away from the binding a bit to avoid breaking the spine of the book as one opens the book widely to make copies. Finally, here in the USA if one takes the book to a copy center to make "better copies" of some of the charts, forms, etc. that you have allowed us to copy, the center will NOT make such copies because of copyright laws. Thus, consider putting a small note on the top of each page in the appendix that you give permission to copy the page in question. A small issue for many, but some of the charts are so well done and important that "better copies" that could be laminated ( as you suggest ) would be very useful. Thanks for listening to what must appear to be small issues, but issues that MIGHT make the book even more useful were easy solutions to be found.

I too have found this book valuable. I started timing in stops and suddenly printing felt more intuitive. Then I took on split grade. One of my first prints was a 16x16 portrait that knocked my socks off.

    So, yeah.

I'm only finishing the darkroom at the moment, but I've already learned a lot reading your book.

A few nights ago, I had a dream : I was using a smaller edition of Way Beyond Monochrome (the current edition is too nice and too big to fit my darkroom space). It was easier to catch an information "on the fly" during my dreaming/printing session in a smaller book.

Would it be a possibility to have a smaller version (may be less information also, closer to a "quick reference" guide )?

I borrowed a copy from another apug pal for a fixed period of time. I have it filled with post its at the moment. This is always a good indication that I will be referring to the book again in the future. So of course I look forward to the next press run.

    Ralph,

Just wanted to thank you so much for the book - I keep re-reading it. It has been the one real source of understanding split-grade printing & having just taken delivery of a new Stop Clock professional timer I am looking forward to using the twin channels to really exploit the possibilities in an easier manner than a bundle of post-it notes with times scribbled on them!

The technical level of the book's content is more than enough to keep me learning for years to come - many thanks.

What is demonstrated in the book as possibilities from a neg is truly inspiring.

Don't buy the next edition. You will be disappointed. The book has grown by almost 75% in content. The good news is, if you don't like it, you can use it to keep the darkroom door firmly closed (estimated weight 3.1 kg).

Seriously, a 'quick reference guide' is a good idea. I will look into this.

In pretty much exactly 12 months from now. Well, that's what the publisher tells me anyway. I better get going!

Yes! A pocket edition! Sort of like the old Kodak Darkroom Data Guide. On steroids.
