hello, i came back to see the newer comments on this thread.
i hardly shoot at 400 ISO at night anymore. that photograph posted earlier was from 18 months ago. I am always pushing film at night or i use flash (since i take a lot of family pics on film and most are in low light situations).
Having daid that, handheld shots at 1/8s are also possible with a rangefinder. As for metering, I simply rely on in-camera light meters, unless shooting for long exposures ( with tripods off course).
For me pushing film is an important part of my night photography. It's a great technique and should be used when required.
