I have plenty of water, hard water that I use a softener on, although I understand that washing prints in hard water is better. Since I am on a septic, would the amount of additional water be a concern?

The silver in the fixer is of concern as is the silver in the wash water. The absolute concentration of chemistry in the wash is also important. That was my concern in the first place. As you use less water, the effluent becomes more concentrated as it is forced to remove the same chemical load + any HCA (if used).

    P.E.,

Do you recommend taking any photo chemical that contains a large amount of sulfite to a hazardous waste disposal site rather than dumping it down the drain?

I am ambivalent about that. Sulfite is a reducing agent, and the HCA would contain lot of hypo and silver salts in proportion to a developer or stop. So, I think it would depend on your local laws more than my opinion.

Since I do not use HCA, I have no problem. The usual work flow that I use is allowed by local law.
