    TFX-2 advice (working solution volume)

Playing around a little with Formulary TFX-2 and TMX100 (35mm). The mixing instructions call for 25ml A + 25ml B + 450ml water to make 500ml of working solution, which is indicated as the minimum amount required to process 1 roll (presumably to ensure there is sufficient concentrate in the solution).

I only process 1 roll at a time so no problem there, but my small tank only holds 400ml. I can use my larger tank (4-reel 35mm) and fill it with about 875ml, but it's a pain. So I'm wondering if anyone out there has enough experience with this developer to say 400ml working solution is really sufficient (ie 20ml each of A and B concentrates) for a single roll, or if that is cutting corners and will compromise repeatability. I don't cut corners, so I will gladly use the larger tank if it is required, but figured I'd ask. More solution is always better than less, but sometimes the recommendations regarding minimum quantities of developing agent have more to do with marketing and/or simplicity than actual capacities.

simply reduce the proportions by 20% to make 400 ml total. Or better yet, pick up a Nikkor SS tank and reel that holds two reels and requires 500ml.

If you reduce the amount of the concentrates from 25 to 20 ml then you also reduce the amount of developing agents. PF says not to do this. There may not be enough developing agents to satisfactorily develop your film.

Getting a two reel tank and an extra reel seems to be your best bet.

That's what I was asking - ie will there be enough developing agent. I guess I'll stick with the instructions. My small tank is a two-reel tank by the way, but it only holds a little more than 400ml (Kindermann tank). My next larger tank is a 4 reel tank. I guess that's what I'll use and mix enough to fill it.

How much different would the developer be if you mixed it 25ml A + 25ml B + 350ml water?

It would be different, but the difference may either be small enough not to matter to you, or you may be able to easily compensate for it by adjusting the time.

It would be more powerful and more contrasty mixed that way. It would take experimentation with reduced agitation, not only reduced time, since a significant part of TFX-2 apparent sharpness comes from edge effects. I'd rather get a baseline with the recommended dilution for an acutance developer before departing.

I'd use 500ml in the larger tank with a single reel.
