    i am gearing up to start making salt prints using paper negatives. i know for film you need to have a high contrast negative image. does anyone have experinece using paper as a negative ( or a glass negative from a dry plate ) for doing other alt.processes ( pt/pd, albumen, wetplate &C)

    i have uploaded in the tech gallery a paper negative that is kind of part of this "work in progress" ...

    LOL....John, bubba...you are overlooking the most important fact.....you are not going to get any UV through the paper.....

    hi jorge -

    i'll be using single weight fiber paper and making it translucent with beeswax. it'll be pretty see-through --- kind of like the brown paper bag with frenchfry-grease soaked through it

    It's relatively common to use paper negs for alt processes. I've been meaning to try it but just haven't yet. Most folk do wax it first so yer on the right track John.

    If you look for the alternative mailing list archives on the web and search the archives from the last year (2003/2004) I know it's been the topic of discussion at least once.

    Why not lith film though? There isn't much price difference.

    Does this mean I can just shoot on Azo, develop in amidol, scan it and reverse it in photoshop? Seems a lot easier that way. Please don't shoot me.

    John, You can do that...it would even fit into the realm of traditional photography (to a point). If you can just figure out the curves and output a computer generated negative so that you can eventually print it on something...(who cares what!!!)...

    guess i want to burn through all my stores of paper and i am kind of lazy / broke. not to mention i kind of like doing things the hard way, and THIS sounds like a real pain in the neck

    azo is 5-7 stops slower than regular paper ... that's like asa 0.09 where regular photopaper is something between asa 4-6 .. ( that is not the stuff that has developer mixed into the emulsion, that stuff is speedy, about asa 10

    photo paper or emulsions you might buy in a bottle / make are only blue sensitive, not panchromatic, so you'll have washed out skys &C ... they'll give you a nice victorian feel

    i've posted another set of images i will be working with - this time it is on fiber paper, and taken with either a meniscus lens or a dallmyer RR. the images will be waxed probably in a weeks time.
