many things by atget... some pictorialist things but

ok, not as famous, or even well crafted, or historically significant,
but one of mine is this image of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it
implies a lot about the modern industrial world, to me at least...

I think your right about it being a timeless image also the simplicity, it's certainly has a remarkable freshness even today 147 years after it was taken.

I happen to agree that this image is mine as well. When I looked at this thread I did not immediately open because I did not want to be influenced ... but the first image that came to my mind was this exact one.

What is it about this image , as I have her books and she made a lot of images and this one stands out.

Is it possibly that this young woman transcends time???? hmmm.

    How true. Batteries not required.

I agree about the story - I was fortunate to hear it directly from Karsh himself.
Amazing! I wish I had the fortune to have met him.
One thing I love about his books are the anecdotes. He described Churchill as being "so belligerent, he could've devoured me." How vivid!

One can interpret "Historic" in several different ways:

Joseph Nicéphore Niépce : generally considered to be the first "photograph".

A photograph depicting an event that forever changed the world:

Neither of these are "pretty" by any means, but are of profound historical significance.

The OP asked for our favorite historical image. I think this or another by her might be mine - http://www.geh.org/fm/cunningham/htm...tml#topofimage

I do like a large number of Weston's as well, though.
