I guess the drawback to having a machine developer is that I can not watch the results and use multiple bath developing, etc

Not to rain on your parade but unless you are willing to spend a lot of time cleaning rolls, replenishing developer, fixer, etc. running test strips for control etc, this is more than what you want in a personal darkroom. I would not get it, and if I have the right idea of what you want to do I think this is not for you.
