    P2 8x10, what is this?

Does this serve a function that I am unaware of? This is on the rear carrier fame on the left side of the camera as you are shooting it. Is it to hold a meter if you are using a meter probe? More to the point is there any reasion that I can't/shouldn't remove it? Is it a guard for the lever that opens the back? It would make it easier to pack in its case and would be one less thing to get snagged on.
