    Fixing Film Holders

I have quite a few 8x10 and 4x5 film holders needing fixing, basically the bottoms have come off. I have zero desire to fix them myself.. Anyone know who is reliable so I can send them to be fixed in North America?

Same here. Most often it's just a good quality gummed black cotton tape thats used to hold the bottoms on.

That said, like most things, Gaffer tape fixes it though of course does look as good.

If Bob were inclined to fix them himself....

Black Hockey Tape - found at any rink for about a buck a roll.

In the long run black gaffer tape leads to more problems as it doesn't last, you end up with a sticky mess, it's as easy and cheap to do the job properly. I've had to restore a lot of items where Gaffer tapes been used and all made harder because it takes time and care to remove it & the remnants.

    Bob,

I had Richard Ritter tape up two 8x20 holders for me when he had them to make dark slides for them. I highly recommended him...

I have also heard book binder tape used for that purpose as well likely due to its requirement for flexibility and permanence.

Be back in town this weekend, so may follow up with you then.

When it comes to removing the old tape adhesive residue the best product in the U.S. is Lift Off #2. It works well, does not leave a residue, and will not harm any surface. http://www.liftoffinc.com/

Goof Off http://www.goofoffstainremover.com/ may work but must be used in a well ventilated area and in fine print says not to use on some plastics.

Goo Gone leaves an oily residue that is almost as bad to get rid of as the tape residue.

Krud Cutter Adhesive Remover is not as good as Lift Off #2. http://www.krudkutter.com/index.php?...d=15&Itemid=71

I've used book binder tape on many 4x5 holders and it works well.
