    Accessory: Stool

Has anyone come up with a stool for field use that is short enough to sit on and focus at a low level and can be stood on for full extention of a tripod -- other than a hard case?

How about cow stool? Sorry, I couldn't resist.

How about those hardware ones that fold flat and when you open it , it has like a round on top where you place your bum. But I guess, that can't go low 'nuf

I too would be interested in this one. My solution (when shooting 4X5) is the hard case for my Toyo. I use a soft case with wheels for 5X7, so sitting/standing on that is out of the question!

Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

I thought of that but I can't get the cow off it, utter nonsense.

    Try a Starbound Viewing Chair...

I use this chair for both telescope viewing & when I'm out with my LF cameras:

I haven't tried standing on it, but it does adjust from 9" to 32"!

Adorama has it here: Starbound Viewing Chair

I know of a store in Greece that sells the Walkstool.
It looks pretty nice if a bit expensive for a stool.
    Check it out here: http://www.walkstool.com/

In the tool department at the local Borg home improvement center I found a plastic stepstool with folding handle that has a lockable storage compartment under the lid. Originally it was meant for some sort of portable toolbox/step stool. The stool is very lightweight, the handle makes it easy to carry, it is just right for sitting on for low shots and standing on for high and the thing cost under $4 USD. I transport 5x7 film holders, light meters, filters, front-mounted packard shutters, rags, cable releases and filters in it out in the field. It really comes in handy for just taking a break as well. You could also adapt a shoulder carrying strap to it very easily if you wanted.

I found it in a shop named Menards in Michigan, but places like Home Depot, Builders Square, and Lowes as well as a good hardware store probably have similar items. I liked it so much I returned and bought one for the studio and the workshop as well.

While it may be more than you want to carry, it does have a carry handle built in.
Rubbermade makes some nice step stools with a folding & locking lid that protect what you have inside the waterproof storage compartment. They will hold lenses & holders & whatnot well. I have used them while on Great Salt Lake (27-33% salt & minerals) and they do work well. Can set them down on the salt or mud & stand on them to get high enough to focus with the tripod extended a bit.
They work well & after you take your stuff out of them you can hose them off with a garden hose for cleaning.

    Portable Folding Stool

Although you cannot stand on it, this little quad stool is short; and light enough to strap onto a backpack for field use.
