The biggest problem with using the rear threads is that often the thread pitch is too fine to mount a screw-on filter. Check very carefully first. The thread pitch (basically the spacing) should look the same on the front and rear. If the rear threading looks finer, then you will not find a filter that will screw onto that.

my Caltar doesn't have filter threads at all, though a gel holder could be easily attached. (one of the thumbscrew or rubber band types)

I have one. 300mm Symmar S MC. Massive gorgeous glass. Fantastic paper weight. 105mm outside diameter. Not your basic backpacking lens (or small car for that matter). I mostly use the 300mm M Nikkor.

You can buy normal Symmar instead, or Sironar-N. They use 86mm filters.

I have a Symmar S 360mm/5.6. the front filter is 120mm. Have not found a filter that fits this size yet. It's a beautiful lense though. Usually hold gels in front of it.
