5x7 Graflex

Looks like I just scored a 5x7 Compact Graflex with lens and bag mag. It was an impulsive BIN on eBay.

I can't find much info on the model and am wondering if it has a revolving back for verticals or uses special holders. Why is it called a "Compact" model?

The 5x7" Graflex Home Portrait has a reversible back. I think I've seen a picture of the Compact. As I recall it's proportioned differently, and they usually seem not to be in good repair.

The compact graflexes were only horizontal. They fold up a little smaller and have a second shutter blind to protect the film from exposure when folding. Many don't work and the shutter material has gone bad. I have two 5x7 compact "projects" at the moment like that. The only revolving back vertical slr was the home portrait graflex, a wonderful but huge camera.

Yes they use different holders, so start keeping an eye out on ebay. Also check for fairchild bag mags from 5x7 fairchild aerial cameras. A simple modification with a hack saw or file will make them fit. They tend to be considerably heavier but better. Hope your compact works. Love to see it if it does. Love the work you've been posting lately.

Thanks Jamie et.al. The catalog page is just what I was looking for.

I'm not too concerned about the FP shutter since I plan to convert the camera to wetplate use and do time exposures. Graflexes are cool for this because the reflex mirror reverses the image laterally and the image recorded on the plate appears the same. This one should be just the thing for half-plate landscapes or reclining nudes.

That Home Portrait beast you had at Bill's is a really sweet camera Jamie. As is the lens. I've been watching for one ever since I looked through it.

I actually read the post and answered before seeing it was you. The moving van came yesterday, I finally finished my obligations for that WI arts board portrait project today, and we are leaving for Syracuse tomorrow. A little crazy right now. The compact is definitely a lot lighter than the home portrait and press cameras. I've ended up with Clay Harmon's home portrait which you saw, and I've used most, a working press graflex, two project compact 5x7's and two project series B 5x7's. All four need new shutters, which I'm going to attempt to make this year at some point. I DO love shooting with the home portrait though and plan on doing some portraits at an event in WI on Labor day.
Can't wait to see what you do with yours.
