calling all shutter experts - Ole?

I have a 14" f9 apochromat artar in a #4 acme shutter - which needs an overhaul or at least a good cla. I'd love to turn this into a lighter weight lens/shutter and I understand this lens can be mounted into a #2 compur (if I could find one). Can anyone verify this? Or have an better alternative to make this a smaller lighter package?

Don't think so. My 14" RD is in a #4 Ilex and I don't think it would fit a copal 3 without machining a totally new mount for the elements but I can't imagine how it would go in a #2 without a big hammer. Contact S K Grimes. I'm getting ready to have him machine a mount for a small petval and mounting it in a copal 3.

    I have a 14" RD artar in barel, a 14" APO artar in #4 Ilex, and a 180mm f4.5 in Barrel

The artar cells in the Ilex will not screw into the barrel of the 180mm Xenar or the barrel of the other Artar. Just a hair too big.

The artar cells in the barrel will fit the Ilex, but not the Xenar barrel. The thread pitch is different, so it starts but will not go past a full turn.

also, the artar barrel and ilex shutter give a cell spacing of 38mm while the Xenar is 34.85mm.

in conclusion id say that your artar will probably not fit a #2 shutter, but since neither the Artar or Compur#2 seem to have standard specs, there may be a chance. Your best bet is to measure the ilex barrel diameter and thickness with a digital caliper before you invest any money. I'm not sure how to measure thread pitch.

In anycase, I dont think the Ilex #4 is that big of a shutter. I have no problems using it on a 4x4" lensboard, and the artar takes up less space in my pack than my super angulon. if you want something alltogether lighter, consider a different lens.

I have seen older (1950s-60s) 360 mm APO-Ronars in Compur 2 shutters, so there is no intrinsic problem with fitting a 360 f9 into the available aperture. I suspect that the custom machine work will be a lot more expensive than looking for a lens already in shutter.

The APO-ronars turn up a few times a year in ebay.de. The more modern version in a Copal 3 is more common if you can live with the large shutter.
