    Watch Out

If you're in the market for "Vintage 5x7 Film Holders", you'd be advised to check with the seller first and make sure the opening above the dark slide is truly 5x7 inches if that is the format film you expect to expose with the thing. The truth of the matter is, I purchased one of these on E-Bay (and there are 5 left to date) that is (are) not full 5x7 coverage. At least the one I got was oversized for my back and I had to shave it down widthwise to even fit into the back. (My back IS standard i found out) And then and only then did I discover that the coverage area was 1/4" less than the full 7 inches. I had a 5x 6-3/4" film holder. This thing was made by Folmer Graflex for Eastman Kodak and it's called a Kodak Film #1. There was no return allowed on this item even before i took a table saw to it. Be informed. I have been.
And buy smart. Next time, I'll ask more questions. Thanks for listening. Now I'll shut up.

Could it possibly be in metric size, i.e. 13x18cm? In that case you could sell them to European users of 13x18.

No, 13x18cm is slightly larger than 5x7".

Would do you mean by coverage area?

Exposed area of a 5x7 is less then 5x7.

You're Right, Nick. I'm new to 5x7 but checked my 4x5 holders and some negatives and you're right. My face is now red.

Did the filmholder have grooves on the sides, before you sawed it down? On the face of the filmholder near end where you insert the darkslide, is there a groove where on a normal filmholder there would be a rib? If so, then you've ruined a perfectly good Graflex-type filmholder that you could have sold for more than you paid for it. They are wider than normal filmholders and are designed to fit Graflex SLRs.

David, I think that backs up your theory.

Could be, but there are Folmer Graflex filmholders that are Graphic-type as well.

... and the moral of this story is: if in doubt, ask on APUG first before pulling the chainsaw out of its box...

The joy of using a chainsaw is always greater than the pain of the damage done. (Unless it's on my Deardorff)
