Goerz Dagor Lens

I have an 8-1/4 Goerz Dagor 6.8 which is mounted in a Compur shutter. I'm considering having it remounted in a new Copal shutter, but I'm wondering if this lens is worth the cost & effort. Can anyone vouch that this will cover 8x10? I don't need a ton of movement at that length, but see this as a nice step down from my 12".

Why can't you just keep it in the Compur shutter? I have many shutters, and don't find the black Copal shutter to be better or more reliable than the older styles, that is in my limited comparative experience.

I mounted my 9-1/2 Dagor into a Copal, and it was pretty expensive. Overall it is pretty reliable, but the speed dial recently got stuck at 1/500 and had to be repaired. Another time, it almost got stuck at 1/250. And the mounting job was pretty expensive. So I would need a very good reason to mount another lens into a newer shutter.

My 9-1/2 Dagor covers 8x10 with significant movement. The 8-1/4 would be cutting it pretty close, I think.

The Compur shutter is dead so it needs a new shutter. I doubt I'll make very many photos at infinity with this lens so once again, I don't need extensive movements at this focal length.

Of course you might need a new shutter, but perhaps also consider sending the Compur to Paul Ebel to see if he could fix it.

Typically they cover 8x10 but need stopping down to get sharp corners. Coverage varied with vintage, so YMMV.

If the Compur hasn't been butchered, with many parts missing, it would be a lot cheaper to have it repaired than buying a new shutter.

I once bought a Dagor in a totally empty Compur (except for the diaphragm), but that's another story.

I've found many bargains by purchasing lenses in "non-working" Compur and Synchro-Compur shutters. They're usually better than Copal shutters, and as long as there are no missing or broken parts, they are fairly easy to clean and repair.

I have a Gold Dot Dagor 8 1/4" in a copal shutter. Mine is probably a newer one. Covers 8x10 with room to spare. My favorite lens.
